I'd like to play this convoy. Has it been done before? Any suggestions on rulesets? Thanks in advance. B. |

I think Mal's "Deadly Waters" are exactly what you want
. Dom, whose great uncle was a first mate on that run, unfortunately

They "should" be available this summer "sometime"

Must admit I'm eagerly awaiting them based on the write-ups posted here so far

My great uncle was a merchant marine who was on the convoy runs to the USSR. He had four or five tattoos on his arm -- one for each ship he served on. They kept getting sunk. There's this upcoming boardgame link |

Pretty much a black eye for both the RN and the USN. |

Used to have a customer who'd come into my folks' store when I was a teenager. Elderly gent, wore a US merchantmarine cap. Chatted with him once and he'd been a crewman on a ship in the PQ-17 convoy and described it, what a nightmare! His ship got sunk, and he was lucky enough to survive, picked up by another ship. He actually seemed to have more anger at the Russians than anybody else because when they finally got to port at Murmansk the Russians wouldn't even let them get off their ship, despite all they'd been through. Guess he felt what the Germans did was awful, but war
and saw the Russian callousness as a sort of betrayal. |

That boargame may be what I am looking for! I' ll check Deadly Waters, as well. Thanks for your suggestions. It is sobering that so many TMPers had relatives serving in that convoy
May they rest in peace. |

The Russkies didn't really do anything to help out the convoys except demand more ships and more convoys. While you're waiting for Mal's rules, give General Quarters a shot. |

GMT has a game named "PQ-17" that is scheduled to be produced soon. You can go to their website to check it out. |

My maternal Grandfather also survived that convoy. He would talk about the time he was sunk in the Caribbean, he would talk about his ship off the beaches of Normandy, he would talk about his service in the Pacific and watching the kamikaze attacks, but he would never talk about what happened to him during PQ-17. I'm really looking forward to Deadly Waters. |

"I'm really looking forward to Deadly Waters." It will of course, be possible to fight PQ-17 with Arctic Storm, which is the edition being released after Deadly Waters. You could probably do it with Deadly Waters as long as you know enough about the subject as the combat rule book will cover all periods from 1939-1945. But to do it really well Arctic Storm will be the one you need. |

A convoy game? Both my father and grandfather served on merchant ships. Each made it to Murmansk twice. It was of great concern to me as my father didn't get around to conceiving me until the war had been over for 5 years. |

It was of great concern to me as my father didn't get around to conceiving me until the war had been over for 5 years. My mother was conceived when my grandfather got back home from PQ-17. Probably the day he got back. Seeing as I was conceived 20 years after that, I'm REALLY glad my grandfather got home. Hey Mal: I've got 40-odd assorted AP, AK, AO, LSD, LST, etc. ships all painted up. I still think you need to come over here for an official red carpet release party when Deadly Waters comes out. I hear Bongolesia Airlines is having a sale on ticket prices. |

"I still think you need to come over here for an official red carpet release party when Deadly Waters comes out. I hear Bongolesia Airlines is having a sale on ticket prices" Yeah
I checked out Bongolesian Air, but the requirement for the cheap tickets is that you have to be able to help fly the plane, serve drinks, and pass around pillows. |
| highlandcatfrog | 12 Jul 2009 11:57 p.m. PST |
Yeah, but with Bongolesian Airlines "flying the plane" doesn't require any particular knowledge or skill. You just stick your arm out the window and flap. Oh o.k. then. I'll start digging a tunnel so you can drive. It can't be too far. |
Mal Wright | 13 Jul 2009 5:52 p.m. PST |
Oh well
.if you can make it to Historicon, I believe you will see Larry Bond run a convoy game! |
| highlandcatfrog | 13 Jul 2009 11:54 p.m. PST |
Doggone it! I was almost to Fiji with my tunnel, now I've got to turn around and tunnel in the other direction. This might take me all night! |
Mal Wright | 14 Jul 2009 5:03 a.m. PST |
Well unless you enquire with the Clash of Arms stand, or Larry Bond himself, you may miss the game. It is not part of the normal schedule. He will be running some Harpoon 4 games so you can probably enquire with him. Oh and dont bother about the tunnel Highlandcatfrog
.I would get too nervous to use it unless its four lanes wide, and brilliantly illuminated. |
| highlandcatfrog | 15 Jul 2009 9:58 a.m. PST |
I was gonna send a limo for you! Stretch limo, fully stocked with the food and beverages of your choice, and gamer groupies/minions to do your bidding! |
Mal Wright | 15 Jul 2009 10:42 p.m. PST |
Oh I get really bored about all those female gamer groupies chasing me and offering to do my bidding. They only want me for my tall, athletic, distinguished. handsome looks, and my sweet bashful nature. |
| highlandcatfrog | 15 Jul 2009 11:08 p.m. PST |
Who said the groupies were female? |
Mal Wright | 16 Jul 2009 9:44 p.m. PST |
Well
ummm
.of course
.I sort of
ummmm
.cant speak for YOU highlandcatfrog
.but the ones chasing me were definately female. Perhaps if you took that kilt off, the blokes would realise you weren't a shiela!!! |
| highlandcatfrog | 16 Jul 2009 11:48 p.m. PST |
The kilt is a manly piece of attire. And do you really want me to take it off? Think carefully. Imagination is bad enough, but could you pass your sanity roll if you saw what I was (or wasn't) wearing beneath it? |
Mal Wright | 17 Jul 2009 4:05 a.m. PST |
Well
..errrr
Personally
.I wouldn't peek. But for those who have a strong tollerance of the horrific, it would at least remove all doubts!!! |
