I have the type and number of tanks for the 1st Panzer Regiment, 1st Panzer Division. I know that it had two light companies made up of Panzer Is and IIs and a medium company of Panzer IVs. The 1st Panzer Regiment also had some Panzer IIIs (26 for the 1st Panzer Division) and I am trying to figure out where they go?

This is the authorised strength, taken from "German Panzer Tactics in WW2" by Charles Sharp –

Bn HQ, Sig Pl with 1 light tank and 2 command tanks, and one Pl with five light tanks;
Two Light Tank Coys, each with one Pz I, two Pz II and one command tank, three light tank Pls, each with two Pz I and three Pz II, and one medium tank Pl with five Pz III;
Medium Tank Coy with two Pz IV, one light tank Pl with five Pz II, and three medium tank Pls each with four Pz IV.

That doesn't seem right. Too many Pz IVs, not enough Pz IIIs.

Here's a site that might be useful: link

It's definitely what's in the book, and just before it is a table showing 1st and 2nd Pz regt each with 28 PzIV on hand for Sep1939, which works out for two Bns per Regt. This was a 'Special' KStN for the Medium Tank Coy, and there enough variations to make your head spin…

1st Panzer Div had special KStN, on 1st September 1939 it had 1st Panzer Brigade with with two panzer regiments each of two panzer battalions.

Both battalions in 1st Pz Regt had HQ plus two light companies with:

HQ (1 x Pz I, 2 x Pz-II, 1 x Bef-Pz I)
3 x Lt Pltn (2 x Pz I, 3 x Pz II)
1 x Med Pltn (5 x Pz III)

plus a medium company with:

HQ (2 x Pz IV)
1 x Lt Plt (5 x Pz II)
3 x Med Pltn (4 x Pz IV)

The two battalions in 2nd Panzer Regiment were identical apart from slight differences in the makeup of the battalion HQ companies (which had a different KStN).

IRL they probably didn't have enough vehicles to meet the authorised strength, esp Pz IIIs.

The tank company orgs were KStN 1171 (1.03.39) and 1175(Sd) (1.09.39).

Battalion HQs in 1st Pz Regt also had a special KStN, 1107 (Sd) and 1150(Sd) both 1.09.39. 2nd Pz Regt used normal ones.

By May 1940 1st Panzer had adopted the same battalion organisations as 2nd, 5th and 10th Panzer Divs with 2 x Light Co and 1 x Med Co.

Light Co:
HQ (2 x Pz II, 1 x Pz III, 1 x Bef Pz I)
2 x Lt Tk PLtn (2 x Pz I, 3 x Pz II)
2 x Med Tk PLtn (3 x Pz III)

Med Co:
HQ (1 x Pz II, 1 x Pz IV, 1 x Bef BPz I)
1 x Lt Tk Pltn (5 x Pz II)
2 x Med Tk Pltn (4 x Pz IV)
1 x Med Tk Pltn (3 x Pz IV)

Still had four battalions in the panzer brigade.

according to Nafzinger anyway, so YMMV.

I agree with Martin's notes; as an extra General Heinz Guderians Pz Leader gives the following info "on 10.5.40
there were 523 PzI's, 955 Pz II's, 349 Pz III's 278 Pz IV's, 106 Czech 35's and 228 38's with 96 smaller command vehicles on a Pz I chassis and 30 on Pz III chassis, alocated between Pz Divs 1 to 5 (2 Regts of 2 btlns), 9 Pz 1 Regt of 2 btlns, the 6th, 7th & 8th had the Czech vehicles, a total of 2574 tanks".
