Here is the facts, what makes a few blocks of figures a Napoleonic game. Look the French have a +1 factor in column. Oh this block of figures it has a skirmish factor of +2. The Austrians can do battalion Masse. Oh put a lot of figures on the table that makes it Napoleonic. Have command chits or 6 pages of charts. This is all nonsence and BS. The game must have four things to make it a Napoleonic game. COLUMN LINE SQUARE: rock paper scissors. The fourth thing is most important: what can that be, the units must fight linear. A division or a brigade must fight with all its units supporting each other, it cannot not be like a bee sworm where one unit goes this way and another goes that way, you where lucky to get them all moving just in one direction. |

You forgot to count the winning entry, which (as usual with Napoleonics) is: "My Own Set." By my count, "My Own" wins with 9 votes
although more if you consider the game authors here who endorsed their own set. |

Quite frankly, I reckon you can aggregate the Shako and ShakoII scores giving Shako varianrs 6 and puttingg it on a par with Age of Eagles. |

Wow, the Napoleonic hobby is rapidly amalgamating. 68 posters have named only 29 different rulesets! I wonder what is the cause of this dramatic streamlining of the hobby? What happened to our fabled diversity
..? |

but I am impressed at the breadth of systems. |

My local group`s rule set is called "Sqaure One". There really is a diversity of rules being used out there
we were asked which set of rules we play the most, and so we have had just that response
if one asks how many rule sets do each of us play, then we might have found that we play something like about 3-4 different rule sets each. Personally, I play four different rule sets; two of them are specifically Napoleonic (my own and Shako) and two are rather more generalised; DBA/M and my local group`s rules. |

LoG should be my entry ;) Cheers, The Bandit |

Even though it was posted on a Napoleonic board, the original question is a general one. But, if it was only meant to apply to Napoleonics, then I would need to change my answer to my own Napoleonic rules, "Black Powder & Blue Steel". |
| IronMarshal | 15 Jul 2009 6:28 a.m. PST |
I started with Napoleon's Battles for Brigade based and From Valmy to Waterloo for battalion based. Moved on to Grande Armee (love it) and our group's own Valmyish rules. Now I play and prefer Shako II for battalion based and continue with GA and NB, but am looking into Age of Eagles and Just bought Snappy Nappy (I like what I see) from Russ when I stopped in to see Dennis at OMM. I will probably be playing all 4 brigade based games in the future and our club's and Shako II for Battalion based. (ADD gamer
