Just posted some pics of my wargame room. It's still a bit out of sorts but will all be together shortly.

That will be nice when you tidy it up!! ;)

I had that dragon my your laptop years ago.
Nice figure.

What a great set up. I love the pegboard. I was going to do that in my garage but it gets dirty too quick. Cool set up.
I wish I could leave stuff out more but the kitty gets at it. The painting table and paint rack is off limits everything else she can get into.

donlowry30 Jun 2009 2:08 p.m. PST

Looks good, but get the stuff off the gaming table!

I recently expanded my gaming table. Here are pix:

You Americans(?) and your big rooms.

So jealous.

Warmaster Horus30 Jun 2009 2:33 p.m. PST

Its not all its cracked up to be Angelbarracks….my damn 16'x5'table is a pain in the arse to keep clear of debris! Just too much debris overflowing from the two 4'x6' tables and 8 bookshelves lining the walls, i guess. Just makes me want to sit in the other end of the room and watch my 53 inch television a cry :)

Nice room Wargamer, I like the big windows as well

skinkmasterreturns30 Jun 2009 2:38 p.m. PST

Tidy up? That is immaculate compared to mine. I cant even walk across the room.

Lions Den30 Jun 2009 4:43 p.m. PST

That is so cool, a hobby store "fix" without leaving home.
I laughed out loud when I saw the peg board with blister pack figs displayed. Your dead lead is properly displayed.
Bravo on the room it looks great.

PS: I have one or two "in the package" items in my wargame area as well. but not a whole hobby store wall…

Damn you yanks and big enough houses to have gaming rooms! Looks nice. :-)

Very tempted to buy one of the houses in Detroit I heard about on the radio tonight – $3,000 USD – ok, they need some work, and I'll need a green card (and a job) but hey I'd get a gaming room!

Lions Den30 Jun 2009 5:13 p.m. PST

So, how small are your gaming rooms? I have heard talk of dining room tables etc – but do you all live in aptartments? I know DF had a game room in an attic or as we sometimes call them a dormer room. Send pix.

Ken

All I have is the kitchen table to paint on :-(

We had two families painting on my kitchen table.

I live in a flat (apartment) and use the dinner table to game on. I use modular tiles so they can be kept on the book shelf.

I run Angel Barracks from a fold away table like this in the same room as the dining table.

This is our flat:

As flats go it is a medium size.
I have lived in smaller flats before.

Property here is expensive and most new/young families can not afford to buy a house so many end up renting a flat.

We own ours but due to the market can not sell it which means we can not raise the funds to buy a house, which we need now that we have a baby.

We have smaller property possibly due to the UK being much smaller than the USA and therefore land is at a premium.
For crazy prices check out Japan.

Michael.

After 10 years in Europe, and eight in England, I'm really looking forward to getting back to Virginia and having a big basement. I can see it now…(fade to dream sequence) three 4x6 tables that can also be put together to form one 6x12 (dream fade out).

But, my British brothers, you have wargames clubs everywhere and a huge variety of conventions within a reasonable driving distance. When I was in England I didn't mind not having a gaming room because I belonged to a very active club that gamed EVERY Thursday night without fail….and a variety of games. Heck, some club nights had so many games going that it was the size of a small US convention!

Thieses01 Jul 2009 6:25 a.m. PST

I have a ranch home in the US. My entire basement is my game room. I know what raylev3 and Wargamer1972 are talking about.

By the way Wargamer, I have the same Batman Jacket. Nice.

Think you hit on a good point(often overlooked) on the difference between USA and UK gaming. USA tends toward individual home setups (large family room, basement, attics, while UK tends toward the clubhouse system. USA usually has one or two close coventions per year, and most others are major trips, UK has scads of closer conventions to most gamers. Size(of countries) matters and can dictate the hobby culture. Of course there are exceptions on both sides of the Atlantic, but IMHO this is a fairly good breakdown of the differences in the nature of wargame setups in both nations!

you might need a bigger bottle of simple green…

Azantihighlightning01 Jul 2009 7:22 a.m. PST

Fingers crossed my gaming basement room in London should be ready by the end of the summer (Being damp proofed at the moment) will also be hiring it out to peeps, as well as running plenty of big games myself.

Lerchey01 Jul 2009 7:41 a.m. PST

I have to say that I'm doubly blessed. First, being an American, yeah, I have big rooms. :) But more importantly, my girlfriend made a lay-on top for our dining room table! The top is a piece of 4x8 plywood with a white laminate surface (she added) and pieces of wood on the bottom to keep it from bouncing around when bumped. She decided that she liked it so much that we just leave it up now and I clear it for games as needed.

I just got a new gaming mat from The TerrainGuy, but haven't used it yet as we've been playing smaller area games like Bloodbowl. Once we get back to something like Dirtside or FT, I'll take some pics to show the table area.

To make things even better, she let me buy a big wardrobe closet (to which I added shelves) and it's right by the table. I have components for 6 or 7 miniatures games, plus boardgames and terrain right there. Not only do I not have to leave home, but most of the time I don't even have to walk upstairs. :D

Gaming on a Thursday night at the Huntingdon club is not same without you.

Keep well

I feel embarrassed to talk about my digs, but maybe I should.

After 30 years of marriage, two kids and builiding a business, I now have the entire second floor of my house as a 'wargame room'.

Really this is just two rooms and a string of 6 large closets [4' x 6'] (of which I have three for wargame stuff. One room is a computer room/library -- book shelves wall to wall every where and still not enough space + my computer station.

The other was a large bedroom with a walk in closet. Big enough for two 4x6 tables, lots of shelves and a painting station.

The only downside is that the house is located on secluded acreage in a forest. Many gamers will not drive out for a game -- just too far.

It is grand -- just grand but . . . perhaps I've earned it.

spontoon01 Jul 2009 3:14 p.m. PST

Dear Angel Barracks;

Grand to hear your point of view. Not all North Americans live in huge ranch houses with rooms like aircraft hangars!

I live in a one bedroom flat and at least 50% of my furniture is made of storage boxes for my business, Five Arrows Figures & Fine Art. End tables, bedside tables, etc.

I can still manage to set up a 5'x 5' table for gaming in my living room; when I'm not swamped with boxes of wargames goods from downsizing or late friends.

Wargamers are a good example of that old maxim; Crap grows to fill the space available!

donlowry01 Jul 2009 5:26 p.m. PST

Well my last house was about the size of your flat, which is why I had to wait some 30 years to finally get a "den" big enough to hold a gaming table. (Here in southern California almost no one has a basement or an attic.) When we got this house I insisted that I had to have a game room. I had 'em leave out the wall between the 2nd and 3rd bedrooms to make one sizable room (c. 10'x20').

On the other hand, there is no game store in this town, nor game club. And the "nearest" conventions (once or twice a year) are in LA, which is about a 2-hour drive over maddeningly crowded "freeways."

Mooseworks802 Jul 2009 6:01 a.m. PST

The closest game stores to me are in the Fayetteville metro area and are about 45 minutes away. Next would be Tulsa at 1.5 hours away. My closest CON is RECRUITS which is 3.5 hours away.

No one that I am aware of does any historical gaming in NWA, Warhammer rules here, particularly 40K. However there is a good contingent of historicals and HOTT up in Tulsa.

nickinsomerset02 Jul 2009 6:16 a.m. PST

I am lucky to have a lovely Girlfriend, who flys so is away at least one weekend a month allowing me to put up my 12 x 6 table and have a big game see the Rapid Fire pics in the gallery: sswg.synthasite.com

I used to have a wargames room but happy with a good local club and regular large games, I am even allowed to put some of my figures on the dresser!

I lucked out.
Three quarters of a two-car garage: carpeted, AC, good lighting with ceiling fans. And it's all mine for my gaiming stuff.

HansTrier03 Jul 2009 10:24 a.m. PST

I want a game room like that! Unfortunately, it looks like I have to wait about 8 years until my oldest flies from the nest.

Valator03 Jul 2009 9:15 p.m. PST

Nice room you have there, Wargamer1972. I agree with the others about cleaning the junk off the table. It would be more impressive with a couple armies lined up against one another.

I'm an American and my house is pretty small. 1926 midwest US farmhouse, low ceilings and all. I do have a garage/barn that can fit two cars and a work area, so gaming is pleasant during the summer and not practical at all in the winter. It's hard to move armies across the board when you're half-frozen.

The Real Chris04 Jul 2009 3:46 a.m. PST

Azantihighlightning – go to any London clubs?

Lions Den05 Jul 2009 7:28 p.m. PST

Hey Wargamer 1972,
Have you been to RECRUITS? I run games there all the time.

I think it is a great convention.

ACWmudwalljackson05 Jul 2009 8:34 p.m. PST

Nice big American house here; I'm lucky enough to have my own little room in the basement for painting. A Tv, painting table, bed, ample shelf and closet space, heating and AC, and viola! A nice littel setup for me!

regards,
John

I work out of the garage which is mostly dedicated to Gaming. Getting a 12X8ft shed next year.

Meanwhile my gaming table is here.

I like the bookcase idea and the storage in the middle there Donlowry I'm working on refinishing the basement, so I can have a gaming area, I want to get my 3 nephews involved in gaming.

pilum4020 Jul 2009 7:10 p.m. PST

Here's my place in Red Oak, Texas. It's a small building with an adjoining 30x30 metal garage for storage of all my terrain and boxes of stuff. Keeps everything off the table! I've got about 200 2x2' fully 3D terrain squares for the system. The house is also adjacent to the pool/patios/hot tub so we can game while the spouses do their thang as well. This works out as now there's no fat wargamers tromping through the house to the restroom at 2AM. Keeps the spousal unit happy!

Anyway, here's the link:

Custom-made by a guy in Dallas. Don't think he's doing them anymore. Probably could be made by a plexi or plastics cabinet maker in Killeen or Austin?

My gaming table is small and round, but I can fight on it skirmishes of more than 150 men :)
