It's a fair enough model for the price (in spite of those tracks) but I can't understand why they didn't add an MG shield.

Has anyone done this and have any tips to avoid potential pitfalls?

I want it folded and realise it's shape is more complicated than it first appears.

Perhaps I should just replicate the old Airfix item…

Do a mock up on paper in one piece and fold it until you get it right.

Then start making similar shapes from plasticard.

Drill a suitable hole for the MG with a small drill.

To ease up the folding of plasticard you might want to consider of making shallow incisions with a hobby knife on the back of the MG shield.

Finally glue to place and also run some liquid glue to rhe incisions you made to strenghten the shield in these places.

It is not rocket science… :)

I just use the one that came with my Kellys Heroes Fallschirmjager Stug crew.

German rocket technology… on a StuG?

To properly model the gunshield, the hatches should be open on the StuG. The front half of the hatch had a pin or hook that socketed into the gunshield, and provided support for the latter. AFAIK the gunshield cannot stand on its own without the hatch in place, though both Spielberger and the Squadron book on the StuG are not clear on this point (but show a very good picture of what this arrangement is like!). Personally I would do the shield in brass myself…

Damon.
