I have allways been and still is a anglofile.
Infact during my year and half of painting I've probebly painted around 1000 redcoats(tho about 60 of them were hanoverian)

Most of my historic books have been with atleat one side being british.

I have read some non Anglo based books, like About leipzig, borodoino and Eylue, or frenched based books like campaigns of napoleon or Napoleons finest.
I have tho ready verry little about the austrian campagin of 1809, the only thing I've read about that is in the campaigns of napoleon which naturaly didn't cover it in the greatest detail.
I have also realy gotten an intrest in the Freiheitskriege(which with my non existant german skills means something like freedom war or war of freedom, or even war of liberation.
I realy love the story of how the humiliated Prussians rose up and showed that they were stong again like they were under Frederic the great.
This is why I decided to do the battle of möckern has I got a chance to do Prussians and russians aswell as french.
This turned out more of rant then I had thought, Do you have any books to recomend about the French austrian war of 1809 and one covering the whole of the war in germany in 1813

NoLongerAMember29 Jun 2009 9:28 a.m. PST

The war of 1809 is covered well in 2 series of books, the 3 volume set of Thunder on the Danube by Gill, or Arnolds 2 Volume Crisis on the Danube.

The Nafziger books are a good source for 1813.

The Wagram book of Hourteille but its focus is said by the title.

Have a look at this, and then tell me you aren't still inspired:

Bowden's "Armies on the Danube" is a fantastic resource for the specific details of the 1809 campaign.

plutarch 6429 Jun 2009 9:42 a.m. PST

Very few books on the Leipzig campaign though.

Espcially as the battle of Mockern was one of the larger cavalry actions….

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP29 Jun 2009 9:53 a.m. PST

Yes. I have Diby Smiths Leipzig book.
There was another one that I think came out at the same time the covers the same battle but can't remember who came out with it

The nice thing about 1809 Armies is that they can also be used for 1813-14 in most cases.

Now, Gunfreak, you are talking my language.

What do you think the OOB should be for the French? Any infantry?

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP29 Jun 2009 10:27 a.m. PST

I'll be going by this OOB
link

plutarch 6429 Jun 2009 10:54 a.m. PST

Looks good, and a classically un-Napoleonic battle.

Tons of curassiers, dragoons and lancers against a lot of stolid Russian and Prussian infantry (22 battalions under Berg, to start with).

Keep us posted (as I'm not sure which side I would prefer to play)…

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP29 Jun 2009 11:15 a.m. PST

Yes, Not sure what I'm going to do with those battalions, as they have no brigades in the OOB. So I'll basicly be forced to guess the make up, 22 battalions coulde be like 5-6 brigades

[Bowden's "Armies on the Danube" is a fantastic resource for the specific details of the 1809 campaign.]

Clay, that book has been pretty thoroughly discredited by historians as being fraught with errors, cribbed footnotes, and the author's inability to translate German.

The Gill book is a much better bet; he actually did the research, and can actually read the languages in question.

Oh, and mate: I'll forgive you this time, but remember the Clay Smith Rule of Napoleonics: You won't be allowed to play Napoleonics with the Elitists, if you haven't done proper research. Sorry, hate to be exclusive, pal, but them's the rules.

Don't make me warn you again!

lets hope gunfreak has read the threads so he knows what you mean…..

[Bowden's "Armies on the Danube" is a fantastic resource for the specific details of the 1809 campaign.]

As well as being badly written and completely un-proof read (if that makes sense) or, proof read by people who had no understanding of what they were reading.

Gunfreak,

For Mockern (April 1813) you need to get hold of Nafziger's Lutzen & Bautzen volume. Unfortunately it is out of print and will cost a fair bit to get hold of. I paid about £100.00 GBP for it a few years ago and it is really worth every penny.

A little book worth getting is MÖCKERN 5. APRIL 1813 (Kleine Reihe Geschichte der Befreiungskriege 1813-1815 Heft 5) available from Helion

link

It's in German though, but unfortunately most of the good stuff on the Spring Campaign is in German. If you can get round the lingo there are many volumes available on google books. Even if you cannot read german some are useful for OOB's.

Here's a link to Plotho's volume on the campaign

link

If you are interested I probably have links to a number of others which are useful.

One final word of warning though there were two battles of Mockern the one in April as referred to @ Napitalia and one on the 1st day of Leipzig 16th October as detailed in Digby Smith's book.

Holy crap, Thanks Nigel.
I was about to do the worng battle.

Sems tho that both battles were about the same size.

Atleast the allied side
