The thread on what's the draw for modern jet gaming has me interested in expanding into it. I like what I hear regarding Airwar C21 but wonder if it'll work well with the somewhat lower tech stuff fielded by those two in 1974. The F-84's and F-100's seem to be basically targets carrying dumb bombs and the fighters are mostly F-5's, F-102's and F-104's with a few F-4's carrying a mix of Aim9B Sidewinder and Aim4D Falcon missiles.

Sound like fun or a dud in the making?

Others may have comments from more experience, but I prefer the late 60's / early 70's jet era. Pre-missile fighting is just fast WW2; any later and its long range missile exchange. Air War C21 should work fine.

YMMV

It's nice to see my post on that thread sparked your imagination about the Greek/Turkey skirmishes.

Don't discount the F-84's and F-100's anything with a gun flown by a good pilot can be deadly!

Your game ideas sound like fun! It makes me what to dig out my modern air combat stuff.

But not right now, I am busy trying to figure out a modern air combat simulation board game called Birds of Prey (the ASL of modern air combat)

Have fun!!

Doug – worse than SPI's "Air War"?

C21 would handle that VERY well. And you will have a ball playing it. I've even tried Korean War with Guns vs Guns and it was a blast.

Unlike "Air War" this game should be playable.

I hope…..

Many thanks to everyone for the help. I decided to go with both Iran-Iraq 1980's and Greece-Turkey 1974. Looking over India-Pakistan just didn't light my bulb for some reason.

Dom just got a nice little order and I'm looking forward to some good times…

Daniel you have picked two out of my three favourite Modern Conflicts to fight in the air. I would also suggest the 1968-70 "War of Attrition between Israel and Egypt, with a walk on part by Syria.

India Pakistan, my fourth favourite with Rolling Thunder Vietnam fifth, is an acquired taste. The later 1971 conflict is probably more in line with your stated interests.

To my mind the Turkey Greece conflict is best played up until about 1978. After that it becomes a technology race. Also after that the F-102s are retired and those beauties are part of the conflicts appeal. ;-P

As to rules I personally think that this period is just a bit before AWC21's optimum time span, to me these rules are best for post 1980's games. However this is just MY opinion and many others disagree. You might want to look at Clash Of Sabres another rule set.

Whatever you choose enjoy and remember “Always Check 6!”

Thanks Fatman.

You're not the first to say that about AWC21 but other sets like CoS and Fox Two:R sound too involved. I never got my pilot's license and don't like to feel like I need one to play a game. Abstracting things like altitude appeals to me. We'll see what I think after a few games – I may change my tune.

ETA: Hmmm…

On second look, at Topgun's website, CoS may not be that involved. I think I'll pick that up as well…
