I'm working on making a model of the Hartenstein Hotel, made famous during Operation Market-Garden. I have found a lot of photos of the current day building, but I'm finding wartime photos harder to find. The few wartime photos I do have clearly show that the building looked a bit different during the war than it does now. The changes are fairly minor, but I do want to build an accurate model of the hotel during the time of the battle. Does anyone have a source for good wartime photos? I'd be grateful for any help. There's one photo here, about middle of the page: link and the famous one with Urquhart: link And in the film Theirs was their glory the hotel seems to appear (1946 I think): link This one may also help: link |

Yes, 'Theirs Was the Glory' was filmed on the original battlefield in 1946. There are several shots of the hotel. |

I want to say from my reading is the only difference between then and now is the porches. The side porch as in the photos above is now enclosed and the porch out back has had the roof removed, not as its shown in the photo of Urquhart. Other than that I believe it is the same. I have the "Then and Now" mags from the 70's. I'll take a look and see if theres any good shots. |

Thanks Palafox! Those really helped a lot! @Usrivoy3: There are a few differences. The biggest one is the painted sign: "Restaurant Park Hotel Hartenstein" along the cornice. Also, the left-hand window on the first floor. Today it is identical to the right hand window, but the wartime photo shows a projecting square top to the window that is different. Plus a few minor architectural details here and there. Small details, to be sure, but I want to do it right if I can. |

Raventhorpe make a 20mm model of it, I have the model and I went to the Hartenstein about 5 years and that seemed very accurate. Bob Bowling has it in the states |

If that is the same model that was used in the Operation Market Garden mega game then it is a good one. You can find it in various shots in this video series I made: YouTube link |

Here is a clip from Theirs Is The Glory: YouTube link The Hotel show up about 2:30 into the clip. I have the DVD and can hook you up with some screenshots if you like, in return for a promise that you'll make it in both 20mm and 6mm. |
