when are people going to learn that perusing an osprey is hardly research no uniform info can be taken as gospel and multi sources need to be consulted ospreys are fine as an intro perhaps but beyond that they fall short in the accuracy dept oh so often, yet so many appear to use them as a one stop shop,IT MAKES ME MAD.

Come to my table with that attitude and you'd get bitchslapped in a new york minute.
If you can glance aat my table and see that Ive fielded Itallians in North Africa circa 1887, then Ive done my job.
I do not bring unpainted/unbased/unflocked minis so considerable time and effort have already been invested.
ymmv,
R.

And this is the reason that Napoleonics is a dying period. While people of that ilk were alive I refused to play Napoleonics, now they are dead and gone in my vicinity it seems to be time to resurrect the era. Not everybody plays Napoleonics as their only period or even their main period so many of us are interested but not to the point of investing £500-odd on obscure reference books (don't tell me they are in the library, they are usually stolen a couple of weeks after arriving in the library system).

The obsessive period detail brigade smack of the GW mentality to me, maybe there should be a separate hobby for them – "The Napoleonic Hobby" as opposed to "wargames" perhaps…

There you go little troll, are you full yet? ;-)

I'm thinking of painting my 1809 French purple just to annoy you…

hugomnumntmstgo29 Jun 2009 3:12 a.m. PST

well bring them around or invite me up to see them ill even give you a hand

NoLongerAMember29 Jun 2009 3:16 a.m. PST

Well if you commented on a unit I had painted, you had better have multiple references and citations available, and be prepared to stand up to intellectual rigour on your view.

Otherwise if you can tell what it is, why get that pernickity?

And if you can't tell what it is… How do you know they are wrong?

waaslandwarrior29 Jun 2009 3:19 a.m. PST

Watch out if you give him a hand.
He might keep it…

For someone so fussy about uniforms a bit of punctuation wouldn't go amiss.

Lentulus29 Jun 2009 4:58 a.m. PST

Their editors do, on the other hand, use punctuation.

"Napoleonics is a dying period."

Rather discourages me.

Crikey, I've got some home-grown competition, if his profile is to be believed…and it's not even the school holidays here yet.

At least I can spel and punktueat proper, and I know abowt propper grammer and stuff.

To address the original post, as I suppose I must, if I want to bring red Brits and blue French to the table try tellin gme different. Have you met Clay the whateverhe'scalledtoday? I reckon you'd get on really well.

I love a bit of Osprey fun…

pancerni229 Jun 2009 9:06 a.m. PST

"Napoleonics is a dying period"…it may not be as popular as it once was, but just take a gander at the Historicon PEL and tell me it's dying…of course having 1809 being the theme for the convention helps but it probably represents a marginal increase in the total.

You can pry the last Napoleonic casting from my dead hand, I will never play minatures of any other period.

You can pry the last Osprey from my dead hand, they are my favorite source.

I would argue that the Napoleonic period side of the hobby is only enhanced by Osprey, I got into Napoleonics when I was in the army, my base had a war gaming club and a library that had pretty much the whole Osprey set, of all eras, I was interested in WWII exclusively at the time and would not have moved into Naps without Osprey, this was in 1995 so the internet wasn't really a resource for me. Not everyone has the time/money to do extensive research, in the end its about enjoying the hobby regardless of how far you want to go with it.

woof woof woof, just clearing my throat.Punctuation?.well as i have never had a typing lesson, tradition falls to the feet of expedience.Spelling, well lets call it average, although i was taught english and now have to deal in newspeak netword americanish and jargon…To make a point. If a person hates and detests Napoleonics.please, why are you reading let alone posting on a Napoleonic board….To being attacked, with so, so, much vitriole. If you wish to paint wizards or goblins and elves.if grotesque spacesuited futurites are your thing.MORE POWER TO YOU and may your flourecents never dry up.IMHO only the wrong minded would attack cross genre, hello doghouse.I stand by my post, although i could have worded it better.Still i have learned one thing. Idle people do have a conscience.
