I just got my first boxes of Caesar Miniatures 1/72 Dwarves & Orcs. My impressions and plans are here

Your review pretty much confirms my fears about the Caeser's fantasy miniatures. Really a shame, considering how well done their historicals tend to be.

I am looking forward to your review of the Hat Sea People. I participated in your earlier thread about doing the WOTR in 1/72 and am hoping the Sea Peoples will make good orc proxies for my own nefarious plans. evil grin

Thanks for the reviews,

Jason

I don't particularly like the Caesar Orcs because they look too "tribal" for my taste. However, I think the Dwarves are really nice and capture the Tolkien spirit of Middle Earth. Ditto on the Elves. Mind you, I've only seen them in pictures. My opinion could change if/when I get abox.

I like them. I just wish there were fantasy cavalry and artillery to go along with them. I got them for skirmish.

How tall are those dwarves?

I know that 1/72 humans should be roughly 1 inch tall, but with dwarves, rules of thumb tend to get thrown out the window.

The Caesar dwarves are tall, standing at 20mm (from foot to top of the head), which scales out to about 4' 8". I prefer using Blood Dawn and Eureka dwarves for 1/72 gaming. They stand about 18mm, which scales out to 4' 3".

I bought one of each of the boxes that Caesar released as a birthday present for myself. I wasn't impressed with the elves (they seemed kinda blah) and the orcs and gobbos were kinds tribal as another poster observed. I rather liked the dwarves as they looked a bit more 'realistic' in terms of anatomy than most mini drawves tend to.

For me however the real winners were the Adventurers and Undead boxes. The adventurers box had a nice variety and had a less cartoony look for their figures than most model companies have these days. Last but not least are the undead, which are a boxful of turbo-charged win in my snotty opinion.

I really wanted to like the Caesar models, and I do hope they do a Zvezda ( these guys redid their Russian knights set, with really impressive results)and rerelease the sets with better sculpts and with cavalry and monsters in 1/72. I'm still hellbent on making fantasy LOTR armies in 1/72 plastic…

I'm going to order the Adventurers and undead next…

I often thought about taking some of the zombie dogs from Twilight creations zombie game and mounting some of those goblins on them for fantasy cav.

Mageknight's Glade Guardian ( a leaping wolf) could also fit the bill…
