Hi I really like the ACW Johnny Reb rules, and was thinking if anybody on this Board, had tryed using them for the Napoleonic era? Johnny Reb incl. rules for troops armed with smoothbore muskets, and I feel that the infantry rules would translated well to the Napoleonic era. You would probelly need some house rules for the cavalry, since its battlefield role change from the nap. war to ACW. I must admite I donīt know to much about napoleonic warfare, so please correct me if I am totally wrong

You might like to look at "Final Argument of Kings" as well – it was Johnny Reb 2.5 for the 18th Century. That said there are lots of Napoleonic War rules out there so you may not have to reinvent the wheel. I know the rules I'm interested in "Napoleonic Command" are not going to suit your purpose since they are very far from Johnny Reb. I'll let others advise you furhter. |

Dean West and his crew have been working on and playtesting Johnny Reb for Nappies for years, but I'm not sure when or if there are plans to publish it. Dean playtested Final Argument at conventions for years before it was published, and I don't think he has yet playtested the Nappy version at any conventions--so it might be a very long wait. I did a conversion set for my own use. If you'd like a copy drop me a line at danjac224@yahoodotcom and I'll send you an electronic copy. |

I got a War of 1812 version that was extensively play tested and played, but it conveniently is also a war where cavalry wasn't numerous or effective. I really like JRIII and Final Argument of Kings so if it was published I'd probably buy it. |

Shako II is a lot closer to Johnny Reb than La Feu Sacre although the latter is a good game in it's own way. Napoleons Battles is set at the wrong level for your gaming i.e 1 stand represents 1 battalion. The results the game give are historically reasonable but I dont care fore the mechanisms. I've played Empire V and it does not work for me all those flow charts get me down. |

I think Dean West put on a game using his Napoleonic version of JRIII at the last two JR III conventions (Louisville – May 2006 and Indianapolis – June 2008) |

One thing to note: Johnny Reb uses regiments mainly because the size of the units fits more with a Napoleonic battalion (300-900 men). While there were battalions in the ACW the regiment was the main element we mainly think of when we think of the ACW. For the Napoleonic Wars the regiment is an organizational element and the battalion fits more closely with the tactical element. I think if you check the ground scale for Johnny Reb you will find that its close to what you see for most battalion level miniature rules. I loved Johnny Reb rules. The charge sequence was long to work but once you got used to it you could fly through it. |

WOW… raising from the grave on this post… 2009 to 2018.. 9 years… Might be the record! That being said, long time JRIII player and I have found General de Brigade to be the perfect set that fulfill my Napoleonic needs… Similar enough to JRIII… Check them out. Madcam. |
