I'm new to the hobby and evaluating various rulesets (Trafalgar, Letters of Marque, WS&IM Lite, Kiss Me Hardy, Heart of Oak) to find the right balance of sim and fun.

Are there any sites out there that have non-ruleset-specific scenarios? ie just a summary of the forces, what's positioned where, what the terrain looks like? Thanks for any tips!

Heart of Oak has a lot of nit noy. Very entertaining reading but not the best of games.

WSIM is fairly straight forward .

Don't give up the Ship is the simplest of all the rules.

For scenarios, I'd just google up a battle on the internet. Probably better than any thing else.

nit noy?

I don't know the exact translation of "nit noy," but I did play Heart of Oak for many years. I suspect what he means is that there are all sorts of little, nitpicky rules in there that you may not remember if you don't play very regularly. I think, though that it has actually held up fairly well. It was first written in 1978, and the Second Edition is dated 1982 with no further updates since then. It is definitely aimed towards people with an interest in sailing and maneuver, as opposed to gunnery. What it is not good for are large fleet engagements. For those, I like Kiss Me Hardy.
