Though I don't have any photos, I got a chance to learn Koenigs Krieg this weekend playing with my 15-mm SYW British army and Prussian allies against a corps of Austrians. I didn't have any light troops, however, I went up against Austrian Grenzers. Those Grenzers are a pain in the butt and I don't like the fact they could screen the Hungarian and German Infantry units behind them when my shot up line finally faced them in melee.

As Army Commander, I couldn't make any of my initiative rolls to save my life and Austrians generally went first most of the game. The British center and Prussian left flank took a beating against the Austrians. My British Dragoons and infantry brigade on my right flank stood off an Austrian brigade of Dragoons and Cuirassier, while on the left flank a regiment of Prussian Cuirassier got a breakthrough charge against several Austrian cavalry regiments and routed them off the field.

Anyway, by Turn ten we called it a game and both rolled for army morale and both wound up withdrawing from the field due to our Army Morale rolls. So it ended as a typical SYW game that I used to play at Iowa State in Ames, IA. The main difference between Koenigs Krieg and Age of Reason is the rolling for initiative for each brigade. But I like Koenigs Krieg firing and combat better than Age of Reason.

I should be playing 15-mm SYW at least once a month, so once I get a better feel for Koenigs Krieg I can post some more constructive comments.

That's my two cents worth,
Blake

It's always good to hear someone's had fun with this era, no matter the rule-set used.

Nice reporting. I am not acquainted with your rule set, but are not Grenzers classed as irregular or non-drilled troops?

Our own Grenzers, Chasseurs, and Frei Battalions take up defensive positions in villages, woods, hill tops to secure a flank or rear. Most of our major battles, they are not even present, but operating under an independent command to disrupt supply lines, river crossing points or harrassing a retreating army (after Kolin).

Look forward to seeing some pictures.
Cheers,
Robert

Koenig Krieg has the light infantry and cavalry usually acting as skirmishers either in difficult woods and towns on the flanks, or in front of your line to disrupt enemy line. I must admit I tend to use them as flank protection in difficult terrain as they are very vulnerable to cav or any kind. Glad to see another player out their with a KK British army. I ran one myself recently and did quite well with that British fire, although Austrians are always a tough opponent.

British armies tend to be small due to the points costs of the battalions but boy do they pack a punch in firing and those Scots (my favs) are tough as in melee.

Great to hear from another KK player getting out the minis and giving them a run.

Great BatRep. Blake. Sounds like those Grenzers were giving your Brits some stick. I noticed that if light troops are being annoying, the best thing to do is push up into their face and run them down in melee. Lights are pretty vulnerable. Even if they do evade (win intiative and bug out it will take them at least 1 turn to come back to the firing line. By that time you should be up in the enemies face blasting away with those horrible British MG's, er Muskets!

I don't like "initiative rolls" in wargames. I played a KK game many years ago and spent the whole game unable to move because of such die rolls. Not fun.

I'd like to have my French and British-Hanoverian armies painted in time for Minden on August 1st. But I don't know if I'll get my French and Hanoverian standards from Vaubanner, Inc. in time.

Though I can understand Der Alte Fritz's grip about initiative rolls. My die rolls are generally horrible (it doesn't matter what I play from The Sword & The Flame to WH40K). If there's a way to screw up with dice, my luck will find a way.

You always get to move in KK….it's just a matter of when?
