I am starting to paint some moderns. For Zombies/Post Apoc/Superhero what have you. To get the most use out of figs I'm thinking of a textured base with a dark gray/light grey dry brush. Maybe some brown thrown in. I think that would be the most versitile for them. What do you do? Cheers, Xin |

I use black and grey rubble. It doesn't look like anything in particular. I have a very large SWAT team done that way. By team I mean 15 figures which would be one hell of a response. For Zombie/Horror you could go with road or tiled floor. I chose a modern rubble look because I felt it would translate nicely to a terrorism response based game. Pete |

That's how I do it. I add a little bit of green just in case I'm putting them on a grass mat. |

Do you base them Square, or Round? |

I'm using round 1" washers. I like the heft of the base. Xin |

I use round washers – actually I use two round washers, one glued on top of the other. It just gives a little extra heft and is easier to pick up. This is for 28mm figures. For 15mm figures I just use pennies. |

I'm using 3/4 inch washers for 15mm. Jeff |

My moderns have all got fairly standard basing – deserty for desert things, earth/grass for more temperate climes. My guys don't do a lot of urban tactical combat though, more sweeping across Sinai, storming Mt Tumbledown etc. |

I am using 25mm rounds except for some odd figs like kids or civilians. I do pretty much what Xintao is talking about. I texture the base with wood filler, so it blends the integral base in, if there is one. Then I drybrush it in grays. You can see it pretty good here. picture |

I buy fourteen of each figure, paint them and base them on different terrain, that way by swapping out the figures during play my bases always match – normally I do: Hardwood floor Brick Asphalt Concrete Grass Dry grass Dirt Grate/steel Red planet rocky Rocky Desert Swamp Carpet Sand Water :-P |

1p pieces for 15mm, 2p for 28mm (or multiple 15s). For rural, paint base brown and glue sand on with PVA after painting the figure. Drybrush bleached bone and add some static grass. For urban I add the sand before painting and undercoat black. Drybush grey. |

I use GW round bases, paint them Desert Sand, and use a mixture of grey and sand-coloured flock |

I have 20mm moderns, and I base them singly on nickels. When I get around to a crew served weapon, I'll most likely base them on a washer. I've been painting/flocking them lately with acrylic pumice gel from the local craft store, tinted with Ceramcoat brown acrylic paint. While still wet, I add kitty litter/small stones/ballast. Once dry, I drybrush from Vallejo Desert Yellow up to Vallejo Iraqi Sand, and then apply a small amount of flock. I paint them all the same, whether it be Iraq or Afghanistan, but that's personal preference. |

I buy fourteen of each figure, paint them and base them on different terrain, that way by swapping out the figures during play my bases always match I used to do the same thing. Now I trim off the base around a figure's feet so the figure has NO base at all!!! Granted, you need to be very careful when trying to get the figure to stand up. And NEVER bump the table!!! :-D MB |
