Are there any good on-line sources for the numbers of fighters, interceptors, bombers, recon aircraft etc. in service by various nations during the Cold War, and broken down by year?

I'm most interested in the 1950's and 1960's, but the data for the 1970's and later would be useful too.

I imagine it is too much to hope for a breakdown of the types, as well, but that would be nice also.

I'm looking for info for the USA, Great Britain, France, etc. (essentially NATO), as well as the Soviet Union (a breakdown of deployments by country/region would be useful).

Alternatively, are there any good books on the subject, that cover the 1950's and 1960's to a reasonable degree?

Try the International Institute for Strategic Studies. The publication "The Military Balance" was always a favorite of mine when researching this type of data during the cold war. They may have a way to access back issues.

Have you tried the later editions of Jane's Military Aircraft of the World"? Look for production figures by major acft type.

You local library possible might have a copy…
