I'm interested in the battles themselves rather than causes of the war/social issues/slavery etc.
I am particularly looking for dvds that have plenty of re-enactor type footage. If there are also computer graphics or animated maps explaining the battles so much the better.
There seems to be a bewildering array of dvds on Amazon etc, many with similar titles and few if any reviews so it's very hard to choose.
I should add that I've already got Gettysburg/Gods and Generals.

"I should add that I've already got Gettysburg/Gods and Generals."

I don't think you can beat those two!

Go to wide awake films… civilwargoods.com
This is a company dedicated to making premier civil war films. I'm ordering the ones on Spotsylvania and Perryville this week. I've seen the Perryville one before and it's excellent.
I've got the Shiloh one, which is also very good.

You might also want to get the 145th Gettysburg Reenactment Disc. Massive Reenactor Fest…

Plus I think there is a film out there of the "At High Tide" Reenactment that was 1 week BEFORE the GAC 145th…

If you need any more ideas, shoot me an email a m_murphy_1963 AT yahoo DOT com.

Another one you may want to look at is "Glory." It's based on the first black unit (54th Massachusetts) in the war…good battle scenes etc.

NOT "the first black unit" but one of the most distinguished…

I have some from the History channel. I also have some History channel videos on subjects like artillery. Pretty good.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'm interested in the top four in this Amazon search. The top three seem to be the same except one lasts 4 hours and another 6 hours. Anyone know what the extra 2 hours show? And is the fourth one better/worse than the others?

There's lots more out there if you look. Lots with re-enactors,etc. Most of the larger Civil War Battlefield visitor centers have lots of DVD's if you can visit any. Most are very well reserched and accurate depictions of the battles.

I own several films made by a company called Lionheart Filmworks, their movie Wicked Spring in particular.

Another title which is a documentary-drama is 'No Retreat from Destiny – The Battle of Monocacy'. Some of the acting is a little stiff but I enjoyed it non the less.

Thanks very much everyone. There's several very interesting suggestions here, quite a few I hadn't heard of before.

Oh, and wasn't there talk of a remake of "Red Badge Of Courage"?

The third of the 'Gods' trilogy won't be made by Turner as they lost a shed of money on Gettysburg and Gods and Generals. Sadley Wargamers and re-enactors are a small world wide audience.

I'd suggest the Gettysburg Battle walks that are produced and available on DvD from The Pennsylvania Cable Network. A number of them can be purchased at the various tourist stops in Gettysburg. ~gary
