Who puts out the best ancient lines in 28mm? What about the widest variety of troop types?

aecurtis Fezian26 May 2009 1:59 p.m. PST

I do a pretty good 28mm line:
_________

You do know that this is really a question without an answer?

"Oh go ahead and bring that wooden horse inside Troy. What could go wrong?"

nycjadie26 May 2009 2:06 p.m. PST

I think that line looks like an overgrown 15mm.

Of course, it's one of those subjective questions that deserves subjective answers. But, it's a great way to educate myself on what's available.

Farstar26 May 2009 2:12 p.m. PST

Just about everyone makes Romans, either Late Republic or Early Imperial.

"Germanic/Celtic" barbarians and NKE are almost as common.

After that, it gets a lot more sporadic, with those peoples the Romans fought and/or drew Auxilia from being favored over those farther afield.

ZeroTwentythree26 May 2009 2:37 p.m. PST

I don't understand what you're all talking about. This should be a simple matter of pointing the completely objective Bestometer at each line of figures and seeing which one scores highest.

huh?

Personally, I pick and choose between manufacturers anyway. I don't know of any one single manufacturer that covers all the bases, even within the narrow frame of my own subjective preferences.

Actualy answering your question. Probably Foundry and Old Glory have the largest and most varied ancients lines.

SBSchifani26 May 2009 3:07 p.m. PST

Best ancients – Foundry World of the Greeks
Widest variety – Old Glory
Best ever – Perry Agincourt to Orleans

John the OFM26 May 2009 3:58 p.m. PST

Redoubt's Trojan War range.

When there is a poll for "Ugliest", I will nominate Hinchliffe's Greeks.

Value for money.

Try Irregular (which are 28mm although they list them as 25mm)

There is only one way to settle this question, once and for all. Every miniature company should make their own line of Sumerians. Then we could objectively compare across companies.

This will become an annual event. Next year I will announce what period I am particularly enrapted with, and every company needs to turn their attention to.

Nic Robson26 May 2009 7:45 p.m. PST

Put us down for the annual event, we make Sumerians in the right scale.
In fact can we go into the regional heats as our Australian compatriots Castaway Arts also make some.

Perry Agincourt to Orleans???? What!!!!

Hmm well in that case I vote the Tiger Tank in 1/32.

rddfxx27 May 2009 7:11 a.m. PST

I second the OFM's choice, to which I'll add the Foundry's biblical range sculpted by the Perry brothers years ago, which includes multiple contingents of sea peoples, Canaanites, Hurrians, etc. Finally, the Northern Bronze Age range which adds some remarkably well done chariots and character figs.

rddfxx27 May 2009 8:33 a.m. PST

Of course, the Perry's Foundry Trojan War line is very good, but I give the edge to Redoubt, primarily on the basis of the wonderful chariots, Helen, the exquisite vignettes -- Death of Achilles and Menelaus triumphant -- and Agamemnon. The rank and file spearmen are also significantly better than the Foundry's.

World of the Greeks is hard to beat, especially since Saleh is now effectively extending it, at GB and Gorgon Studios…

Crusader's Punic War ranges are a favorite of mine. Good coverage of all the protaganists, and the range is still being expanded.

Steve Saleh's Greeks are also fantastic, the full range is spread across Foundry, Artizan and now Gripping Beast.

If the Middle ages counts as ancients, the Perry's Late HYW are a benchmark for top notch sculpting.

Foundry Vikings are also worth a mention. Sculpting is great, range is huge and there are loads of fun characters and oddball vignette sets.

skaran27 May 2009 12:22 p.m. PST

Eureka's Sumerians are very nice as are there Assyrians. Now if only they did opponants for them as well..(Hint hint)

nycjadie27 May 2009 12:36 p.m. PST

All really good suggestions. Thanks.

SBSchifani27 May 2009 12:54 p.m. PST

wow

Marcus Brutus28 May 2009 9:09 a.m. PST

I think this is a dumb topic!

nycjadie28 May 2009 10:20 a.m. PST

So, no appeals for people's opinions? Hmm. That logic would mean that opinions as to subjective values have no value. I disagree.

Thanks to all the helpful posts!

Best,
Steve

Marcus Brutus29 May 2009 2:11 p.m. PST

Steve, the question is so vague, so broad and so ultimately useless (the information can't be applied in any meaningful way) that I don't understand why you'd ask it. If you asked who makes the best Punic Romans or Celts or Assyrians in 28mm that's one thing. How would you use the advice offered here in any practical application?

Stuart at Great Escape Games29 May 2009 2:41 p.m. PST

Ah, it's just a bit of fun and we can all join in.

Gripping Beast's Republican Romans are my favourite. An absolute pleasure to paint. I painted it years ago and I recently had to get another unit 'cos I just missed painting them!

Rich Knapton29 May 2009 5:07 p.m. PST

I don't wargame ancients and even I know this answer. It's Gripping Beast Successors. Duh.

When there is a poll for "Ugliest", I will nominate Hinchliffe's Greeks.

But they look good after painting. laugh

darclegion01 Jun 2009 3:31 p.m. PST

Id have to have a mini from every 28mm line available to answer that, but I can tell you my favorites,
Vendel, Immortal, A & A, Eureka, BTD, Cobblestone Castings, Crocodile games, Foundry, I cant just name one……I dont think I ever could.
But if you want to get into the best sculptors, that would be another tough question.
That list would start like this,
Chris FitzPatrick, Tom Meier, Mike Broadbent, Nick Collier, Mark Coppletone, etc….Did I mention Chris Fitzpatrick…

I have to agree Hinchcliffe are pretty ugly

Limes Arabicus.

By far the most interesting.
