Hi to you all! My friend and I plan to create scenery (48" x 48") for Pirates (28mm). Question is if we should go for the "Disney-Hollywood look" or for the more conventional historical style? Especially for the design of the houses I wander. What do you think of this?

The game is LOTHS. The campaign will be historically oriented but for the pirates both Teach and Sparrow are favourites. We found very little about the real looks of the habitations of the Carribean from that erea. This image is of an historical town street: link Thanks! Your advice is welcome!

A 4x4 LotHS table using Hirst blocks and lots of plastic foliage. The project started with intentions of a true to life ruin, and drifted to more of a pseudo-fantasy table as the work progressed. On the upside, the modular nature and high object density make for a great table to play on.

valaaga – that is a very cool link. Thanks.

Nice set-up, Ran.

If you go strictly historical, the buildings will be quite cramped for moving figures around in.

Its all about Hollywood! Its nicer to look at.

Years ago National Geographic did a spread about the earthquake at Port Royal. I can still recall the fold out drawings of the town, which were really cool. If you could find a copy of that, it would be a nice template for your project.

Last year at Flat Con in Illinois I ran a pirate game, very similar to what you are wanting to do. I used LOTHS rules and had a 4'x4' board as well, here is a link to some pictures that could interest you, if you have any questions PM me I'm always available to talk pirates!

I demand complete historical accuracy for my skeleton pirate crew to battle against my anorexic, yet inexplicably busty and underdressed all-female pirate crew.

Naw,.. Hollywood all the way.

Well, it can be rather warm in the Caribbean, so that would explain their attire…..

Thanks Andrew, great link. We fell in love with Map 7 (John Fletcher's Land).

I recall the authors of LotHS stating they wanted Historical but with a Hollywood flaire. They drew the line at undead pirates and sea monsters however.

I imagine those will be included in the supplement.

A touch of Disney POTC for inspiration……

I am much more inspired by the mythical pirate age than that of hard history. Drawing from movies, comics, books, and even just crazy imagination, I hope to build a world that looks like it flutters around the edge of history.

@Whatisitgood4atwork:
Why are they anorexic? And how are they anorexic when sculpted into wargame figures?
O/T: Hollywood and history do sometimes overlap, but there are historical pictures and documents available out there to make a historical looking set. However towns should be imaginary so they can be changed for the scenario and people don't get bored fighting over the same place over and over; so my answer is, make historical buildings and objects, make up places, but keep some cinematic/fantasy buildings around in case you feel the need.

Among the major charms / constant features in pirates movies and comics: pirates-corsaires.com/bd.htm

- the co-occurence of Spaniards in morions and other people in tricorns (such as the soldiers of Hernandez de la Banana against Pepito stiring.net/bd/pepito ),
- Pirettes link !
'Fluttering around the edge of History' indeed: part of the scenery could be equally 'marginal'.

I prefer the look in "Cutthroat Island" (1995) and "Pirates of the Caribbean" best:
