Hi,

I wanted to know what size bases people are using Rapid Fire! Does the size matter? What size are you using? I don't own the main rule book. I have downloaded the free set of rules to try something simple out and I have the WWII figures from the latest Wargames Illustrated.

Thanks

"Does the size matter? What size are you using? "

No the size does not matter. All my troops are based on UK pennies and worked fine in RF, although I confess I have now given up playing RF in favour of an old home-grown set.

In 1/72 scale (and I am using the Valiant figures) I am basing figures in twos on a 40 x 20mm base and single figures on a 20mm square base. MGs, mortars, AT guns go on whatever size is required. RF2 is totally flexible and figures can be based as you wish. For example, it is quite easy to use 15mm figures based for games like FOW or Command Decision to also play RF2.

hi

I base mine on 1 penny pieces (same as Mike Snorbens)work perfect, cheaper than washers

These work well with the valiant minis also (ones free of WI)

Get wiered looks though when I go to the Post Office and ask for £1.00 GBP worth of Pennys, or is it just the wal I look

LOL

I just use my existing multibased figures (typically 2-3 15mm on a 30x30) and odd single figures (on pennies) and add/remove bases to keep track of losses.

Base sizes don't really matter and you can either use individual figures or based ones, as long as they are fairly consistent between sides.

I base my 15mm infantry, mgs, light and medium mortars on a 1 1/4 by 1 1/4 inch square metal base (Wargame Accessories). Two infantry and two or three crewed figures. Gun crews and heavy weapons go on their 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 inch metal bases. I use Plano tackle boxes with strips of self adhesive magnetic tape to store and transport my figures. Works great.

As others have said RF is very flexible and you can use any existing mounting scheme you like. Many I know use their FOW stands. The standard German company shows 8 figures in RF. Those who use the FOW bases usually use 4 stands with each stand able to take 2 hits to keep things consistent. Just one example.

As mentioned by the others on this thread basing is totally flexible.

Something I have found to be useful with regards to basing my Valiant Figs, are the commercial FoW plastic bases… as mentioned by Marc33954. These bases (sm, med, lg) are great for basing any/all figs and are particularly useful for the Valiant Crew Served Weapons.

I also base mine individually on pennies. The Queen's head must be placed face down.

Aliosborne26 May 2009 5:35 a.m. PST

Yes of course – Queens Head facing down, as it is against the law to deface the image of the Queen (good thing no images of MPs on there, as these woul all be defaced – or claiming huge expenses – LOL Sorry)

I use Valiant – Americans on 1 cent coins, Brits on pennies and Germans on 2 Euro Cents :-)

Cardinal Hawkwood26 May 2009 6:16 a.m. PST

as we in Australia have nothing smaller than a 5c piece then that is it for me..

aercdr26 May 2009 6:43 a.m. PST

Originally, I had multiple figures on a base with several individually based figs. Now I base them all on Litko bases the size of a penny.

"The Queen's head must be placed face down"

Yes indeed. Glue sticks better to the portcullis anyway.

French Wargame Holidays26 May 2009 3:47 p.m. PST

I base my bog std inf singluary, my MMG in pairs, HMG in threes, light mortars pairs, heavy threes, light and med arty crew fours on a base, heavy arty sixes, AT rifles pairs, AT guns fours.

I use Aussie and yankee 1c coins

cheers

Thanks for the responses.

So as long as basing is consistent, it doesn't matter if I base them as single figures on pennies or if I base them 2 figures per bases?

Marc33594 Supporting Member of TMP28 May 2009 4:07 a.m. PST

Actually might want to do both! Say you have a German unit of 8 figure with 4 bases, 2 to a base. You take an odd number of casualties, lets say 3. You remove two of the bases substituting a single figure on a penny for one of them and no need to mark a base to indicate one casualty from that base already.

Marc: I've been perusing your Rapid Fire books you sent me. Very pretty pictures, but every time I try to read the rules I get sensory overload -- too much stuff thrown at me in what seems a strange order. I'll get them back to you soon.

Marc33594 Supporting Member of TMP30 May 2009 4:21 a.m. PST

No problem Don. Actually find the rules quite eaay and simple. Best way is to actually play a game, like at a convention, or have someone walk you through a turn or two. We have absolute novices to the system play in our games at Recon and Hurricon and by about turn 4 they are capable of running the game themselves. I do find the summary with the numbered steps is very helpful. I hope you noticed the charts have numbers keyed to those steps.

I should add we do convention games a bit different with all players on one side against a "programmed" enemy (ala the old battle problem from our military days) which makes learning much easier and makes the scenarios alot more fun for a newbie!

I am re-basing my 20mm figures. I am thinking of using 40mm square 2mm mfd bases for pairs of infantry, HQ groups (3figs) and team weapons – MMGs, HMGs, infantry a/t weapons, man pack flamethrower etc etc. Bigger bases for the a/t guns and artillery.

I have looked at 30mm squares for the pairs of infantry ( and the bigger squares for the team weapons & HQs) but this looked a bit "cramped" with two 20mm figures on 30mm squares, or am I over-thinking this?

Iberian512 Jan 2025 2:52 p.m. PST

I have tried editing mfd to read MDF but it keeps changing it

😀

My philosophy is go with what looks good to you. Rapid Fire (and Rapid Fire Reloaded) don't require any specific size bases unlike some other rules. 16 years since my last post on this thread and still a big fan of Rapid Fire.
