All you scale experts. Will these work?

If they are 1/100 then yes. If they are 1/87 HO then no. Weird how they call them HO. They look like HO 1/87 to me when seen against the scenery. Send them an email.

I think 1/100 and 1/87 cars both work well with 15mm. I've had people chide me for using vehicles that were "too small" when putting 1/100th scale architectural civilian cars on my table, but I've never had anyone say the 1/87 cars were too big.

The two most common questions I got at Spring Recruits were "how did you make the roads" and "where did you get the 15mm cars (they were 1/87 scale)?"

It's like everything else, though, what looks good to me looks bad to CPBelt. You really don't know for sure till you clap eyes on it yourself.

Good point AAG! Very true. All depends how someone likes everything to be in scale. We had this debate over the 15mm Landmark buildings, which I love, being a bit too small for many gamers. Eye of beholder.

Actually, 1/87 cars might work better because the figures are on bases, making them taller and look more in scale with the 1/87. Same works for me using 1/48 cars with my 25mm skirmish games.

Walmart sells great 1/87 scale cars for $1 USD each as well.

Thanks guys.

I saw true "HO" (1/87) scale cars in an "Ambush Alley" rules 15mm Mogadishu game at RECON, and they looked GREAT.

I actually asked the GM "Where did you find perfect cars for 15MM?" and he said: "Wal Mart HO 1/87 die casts"

So I'm a believer.

Yup…1/87 is the right size.

I found dozens at Wal-Mart for a $1 USD or $2 USD each…lol.

It felt like being a kid again.

Those cars aren't based on any particular real-world vehicle so who's to say that they're not closer to 1/100? Given that a lot of "15mm" is closer to 18mm (1/87), there's really not much difference anyways.

At that price, it is worth a try.

Ambush Alley Games25 May 2009 10:00 a.m. PST

Wyatt, the Hot Wheels and Matchbox stuff isn't any particular scale, but the Cararama and a some other lines sporadically carried at Wal Mart are actual 1/87th scale models.

Matchbox and Hot Wheels are WAAAAY to big for 15mm, so I'd advise against using them for 15mm – they might work for 20mm, though (not based on scale, because as Wyatt says, they don't have one, but just on "eye-balling" their appearance).

infojunky25 May 2009 12:38 p.m. PST

The true answer it depends on the manufacturer of the "HO" Car. I have a some that fit very well with 15mm figures, and some that don't, I know that isn't really helpful.

As for Matchbox and Hot Wheels some work some don't as they are modeled to fit the packaging, many of the mid sized trucks work just fine with 15mm figures most of the cars don't.

So, Ed looking at the stated measurement in the link They probably will work.

They also have small 16 packs of cars. there all one color but you get 4 different styles. link

on a related note how well do HO-1/100 scale people work with 15mm. I'm thing about getting some to use a cheap civilians/by standards.

A comparison of 15mm Flames of War figures with HO figures.
Beware that Japanese HO is 1/80, otherwise with everyone seeing 1/50+ working with 28mm figures I don't see why you couldn't do the same thing in 15mm, plus due to the engineering of the figures and cars alike that's probably the biggest figure you could stuff into the car.

Smokey Roan25 May 2009 7:26 p.m. PST

Thanks, chironex . ;) Nice work.

(I'll leave it to someone else to comment about your Japanese HO figures. Guys in speedos? :O )

:) :) :)

I actually ordered these cars off a company on Ebay and I felt they were way too small next to my 15mm Rebel Minis stuff as well as my actual HO sized buildings. I contacted them and they are exchanging for their "OO" scale which hopefully, by the measurements listed, will look better.

"who does number 1/100 work for?" Austin Powers :)

chironex26 May 2009 3:24 p.m. PST

@smokeyroan:
Those aren't Japanese, those are I think German, Japanese HO would be a little bigger.
Speedo, also, is a brand name, the slang for the design style itself is "budgie smugglers" (shut up!) and anyway those figures are not wearing them as their styles seem a lot older to me.

Ed, I've wondered the same thing, until I found out about TT Scale. It equals to about 1/120 scale. Here's some more info about it:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TT_scale

ttscale.com/w-size.htm

And here's a website of a gentleman who manufactures TT Scale vehicles and other accessories. I'm tempted!:

mini-things.com/resin.html

It would be nice if someone devoted a range of TT Scale vehicles, since it seems like there would be a niche for it in 15mm wargaming. Good luck, Ed! thumbs up

Farstar26 May 2009 4:10 p.m. PST

Another scale, eh?

1/120 would be about right for 15mm "Top of head"
1/100 would be about right for 15mm "to the eyes"
1/87 would be about right for "Heroic" 15mm.

At least in theory.

In practice many 15mm minis are overly bulky and carrying around a 4-inch thick manhole cover to stand on, so the next scale larger will *look* better.

Here's a Bat Rep with vehicles with the same dimensions as the ad.
