Here is the action that took place in last week's Colonial Whitewater Canoe Race. The premise was a Wealthy landowner in the Ohio Territory was offering his daughter's hand in marriage, along with a large tract of land. The invitation went out to all of the best adventurers in the Colonies, and the reward was to be decided by a Canoe Race. The Captain's gathered their crews and set off for the race. May the best man win!

For dramatic effect, a little music to accompany while viewing:

Gert,

Great beer and pretzels game.

Wait!

Winner gets daughter? But there were two races?
Was she so homely, that you had to look twice?

Cheers,
Robert

Well, since I, the Gamemaster (Pennsylvania) came in first place, there were immediate cries of 'Yankee Cheater' from the Southerners. So, to prove my metal, a second race was warranted. Unfortunately, I came in second last on the following run.

The game was a blast, and much fun was had by all. Lots of 'ball busting' and boasts, and intense die rolls. Plus, we played three games in the time it usually takes us to play one. Just goes to show that some of the best games you play are the ones you create on your own!

timurilank- if you find an attractive 25mm Colonial era female mini, let me know. Ours was rather homely.

One of the women in the Conquest Cora/Alice set is OK, but the other one is screaming her lungs out. (make own joke here)I can't recall which figure is Cora and which one is Alice. The Black Scorpion Governor's Daughter is nice looking.

Conquest is a great set of minis. Unfortunately, we discovered them after 90% of our F&I armies were complete. They are certainly the best of the group we have. I will have to check for the 'Last of the Mohicans' character pack at Historicon. Hopefully its Cora screaming, as I thought Alice in the movie was totally cute!

Today is the day Judah. Yes today is the day, Massala.

Are the canoes homemade? What rules?

Looks like great fun. Thanks.

GW's Vampire Countess is a rather nice figure. I have a set of twins painted up.

Half of the canoes were a deal at the Historicon Fleamarket, and the rest purchased from Michael's for 2 dollars a piece. Home spun rules that took an evening to write.

That looks like a great game! I too did something similar a while back:

I too got the Michaels canoes as well. Since these pics were taken, I've upgrade some game markers with actual crashed canoes, loss of paddles and figures in the water (figures cut in half on a water base)and portage crews.
My game is also home grown with a few twists; each team in the boat also owns an outpost that can resupply their canoe and of course shoot at opponents as they pass on by.
Definitly very fun to do…

Tough race! Sounds like a lot of fun

And I though Dragon Boat racing was hard!

Any chance of getting a copy of your rules? The guys would love to try this at the club.

Either look good to me!

There was a guy who used to run canoe race games at the HMGS East Cons. I never had the opportunity to play, but it always looked cool. I'm not sure if it was a commercial set of rules or not. After seeing your post, Greg, a few months back, I decided to give it a go. It was really easy to set up. A blue sheet on the table, with green over top for land, and strips of light blue/green flannel sheet for the rapids. You can get canoes from Michael's, and I also purchased the bear as well. The rest of the terrain and figures I already had in my F&I collection.

I can send anyone a copy of the rules that would like to try them out. Greg, I would like to get a copy of yours as well to compare for ideas. Our club had such a good time, I'll probably start running games at the Cons.

Terrific idea. Where can I get your canoe race rules? Rich at: smetfam@fuse.net

I have received the emails, and am currently working on posting the rules on my blog. I will let everyone know when they are up.

Thanks,

Thanks for the positive comments. I haven't been to Historicon for some time. It won multiple awards from 2002-2006 and it kept going because of requests from people who wanted to play it. The rules were written by G. Nichols Hatsoff for 15mm and with his permission I modified them for 25mm and have always given him credit.

Canoes in my game were mostly Old Glory 25's. Scenery was scratch build by myself or Herb Gundt of HGWalls. Most trees and small rocks by Scenic Effects (available in Model Railroad stores) and one other company that I can't remember. Large rock from back yard
