Following on from me picking up a Corgi model of a 1/300ish Lancaster really cheaply and ready to game with. Anyone ever played a Dambusters game? I thought it might make a good demo/intro game, any suggestions? Lacking rules I'll hack out something car war-ish for flight, do you think the scale would work, etc? |

My son runs one every night in his bath, seeing if he can get half the contents of the 'Mohne Dam' onto the bathroom floor. A variation is Sink the Tirpitiz, where he crashes down toys into the plastic kidney dish we use to wet his head. All in all most enjoyable, but it pays to have a towel handy. |
shelldrake | 12 May 2009 6:29 p.m. PST |
the "Check Your Six!" rules allow for planes attacking ground targets, and has stats for the Lancaster. It shouldnt be too hard to come up with a scenario for this, and the CY6! yahoo group would be a good way to get help on this. |
Top Gun Ace | 12 May 2009 6:46 p.m. PST |
Sounds like fun, and yes I think the plane/scale would work fine. The dams would be a bit large in this scale, if done at full size, but you can always reduce them a bit. The game has been done before in the UK, as a demo game, but not sure what rules/systems they used for taking out the dams. You need to get the aircraft speed, drop height, and drop distance pretty exact, so it is a challenge. To simplify things, maybe rolling a 7 on 2D6 would work for an instant collapse, with some damage done to the dams for near misses. Flak and low flying can be dangerous, as can dropping the bomb, and having a chance to have it bounce back up and take out the bomber. Most of the German nightfighters were apparently looking for the bombers at a higher altitude, so they really don't enter into the scenario much. |
Martin Rapier | 13 May 2009 1:27 a.m. PST |
Yes, there have been several games done on this. There was quite a good one published in WI years ago which was more of a mini-campaign where you had to route the planes to the different dams. You can keep it fairly simple, especially for a demo/participation game. We used a Corgi Lanc (Y Yorker IIRC, Gibsons Lanc) for our participation game a few years ago, but that was more generic covering raids on the Ruhr. It was a lot bigger than 1/300th though. |
boggler | 13 May 2009 1:55 a.m. PST |
I'd have thought that this would be perfect for 1.600th using TD Lancs and some nice scratchbuilt terrain :O) You could even do it in three stages, the run in, over the target and on the way out, with nightfighters, flak etc as well. I think that's what the WI article was like? |
boggler | 13 May 2009 1:57 a.m. PST |
There's even a Dambuster Lancaster in the TD range: **ISA82b (DAMBUSTER) x2 |
Gumshoe | 13 May 2009 2:51 a.m. PST |
Boggler – is that actually out? Or just in the catalogue, but not produced? GS |
Gumshoe | 13 May 2009 2:51 a.m. PST |
BTW – o the front page it said this topic had 48 posts on it – a bug?? GS |
boggler | 13 May 2009 3:27 a.m. PST |
It's listed as available on the TD site and Dom has listed it as well, so I guess it is. |

We ran a slightly warped version of the Dams raid a couple of years back at the Battlegroup North show at Elvington
The Germans had found out about the raid & decided to send in paratroopers & glider troops to take out 617 on the ground, capture a set of plans & Barnes Wallis
It was in 20mm scale & covered a wide area
but at times you could hardly see the table for youngsters playing it :-) Mind you, we did stick to historical accuracy
Nigger was still run over! |
Gumshoe | 13 May 2009 4:45 a.m. PST |
Thanks Boggler. Will look it up at the next show I go to. GS |

Just a reminder to movie fans, we have a treat coming: aintitcool.com/node/30076 link But I read on some industry blog that it looks more like 2011 before it will be finished. Sigh

Yes, TD do finally make the Lanc Dambuster. It was on their list for years (7?), without being actually in production, but they finally got around to doing it. |
Kutusov | 13 May 2009 10:26 a.m. PST |
The RAF leuchars ran an excellent public Participation game at our show of the Dambuster raid in 1/300th the more recent one in the magazine was in a larger scale.. kutusov |
General Jumbo | 13 May 2009 11:56 a.m. PST |
Kutusov, you bridie eater, you beat me to it by minutes! I have just found the rules, and was about to offer them to Fuzzy Wuzzy (on receipt of an e-mail address) when I realised that they are incomplete until I can get to the club and find the rest (it was cobbled together in a suitably RAF sort of way, many years ago). Club night tomorrow, Friday night to hack it all together, and hopefully Fuzzy will get something to play with by Saturday night. Will that be OK, Fuzzy? |

Top Gun Ace | 13 May 2009 12:39 p.m. PST |
General Jumbo, I'm very interested in the complete set of rules as well, if you can e-mail them to me, or post them on a Yahoo Group. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely,
Rob |

Pity the fool who gets to play the dams. I guess he will get bombed! |
6milPhil | 13 May 2009 3:51 p.m. PST |
Thanks for the replies Gents. Doug that's both inspirational and funny. ;-) Top Gun Ace – exactly, I was going to concentrate on these details with slight modifiers from dice, so the pilot gets a couple of chances to address any errors before letting the bomb go, or deciding to loop around again. Boggler – I'm going to concentrate on just the bomb run I think, get the participation rate high and keep it simple as poss. The reason for 1/300th is I've found a ready to go model from Corgi for a fiver, plus I'm already into 6mm. Jumbo aye that'd be grand
I'm planning ahead for the autumn so I can build a dam so there's no great rush. My email is; philipjpagedam@btinternet.com – take out the dam of course. ;-) This'll be a game at a show put on for the Royal British Legion, and I'm going for a high turnover of participants with the aim of raising donations – it's a donate to play. Anyone have any pointers for technical details of the dam? |
Top Gun Ace | 14 May 2009 12:42 a.m. PST |
"Pity the fool who gets to play the dams. I guess he will get bombed"! Or not, since some dams were hard to find, and other reservoirs/dams were bombed instead, accidentally
.. |
Kutusov | 14 May 2009 10:43 a.m. PST |
I'm going for a high turnover of participants with the aim of raising donations – it's a donate to play. The Leuchars game will be ideal while one plane was dropping the bomb another was on the bomb run with a never ending queue of people wainting their turn I was running the kitchen at our show and got a turn, really quick play. and great fun |
donlowry | 14 May 2009 1:34 p.m. PST |
If you had real water behind the dam, it would be more fun to actually breach it! (Messier, too!) |
General Jumbo | 14 May 2009 4:32 p.m. PST |
Rules only partially discovered at the club tonight, so will be working to make them acceptable this weekend. Very simple, can be played very rapidly with aircraft queueing up to take their run in quick succession (just like the real thing). I caught the bug again myself, just going through the bits and pieces! Standby Fuzzy Wuzzy, Top Gun Ace and Kutusov, I'm going in first
. |
General Jumbo | 15 May 2009 2:10 p.m. PST |
Fuzzy Wuzzy and Kutusov have just been sent the brand new rules, called "DAM 'N' BLAST". One whole page, including a plan view and a nice piccy. I do not have an address for Top Gun Ace? Erik stayed behind at the club for half an hour with me to rake over the older rules last night, and the new version just fell into place here at the home pooter tonight. Anybody else wanting? |

Mjkerner I've just read the link? Gosh Peter Jackson – my 'favorite' director. I look forward to the Guy Gibson 'standing on a box' and 'dwarf tossing' jokes he inserts. Still = at least there'll be no doubt that the Lancasters have wings
* BTW SELWG – a south London club -= did a show game of Dambusters around 20 years ago that was very popular, though I never managed to fight my way through the scrum at a show to play it. John T *Balrog argument, for the uninitiated |
Steve Holmes 11 | 11 Jun 2009 3:48 a.m. PST |
We all know they have wings, but can they fly?? With Peter Jackson at the helm, there's a very good chance the Dambusters won't be led by Tom Cruise and flying in B17s. |
