"According to the 1869 regulations, eagles were to be carried by a second lieutenant, escorted by two fourriers and three selected privates first class. The regiments of two battalions the eagle was carried by the first; in regiments of three or four battalions, by the second. Those battalions without an eagle would carry a fanion." Stephen Shann, Louis Delperier & Jeffrey Burn, French Army 1870 -71: Franco-Prussian War (1) Imperial Troops, Osprey, London. 1991. page 38. I am trying to understand the above reference to Standards carried by the French Imperial Troops in 1870. Am I correct in thinking that the "fanion" Shann, Delperier and Burn are referring to are the just a Standard without an eagle atop the pole or this there something different? At the moment I am looking at the 1st and 3rd Battalions having a Flag without and eagle atop the pole and the 2nd Battalion having the Flag with the eagle atop the pole. Any comments or corrections would be helpful thanks |

No, the 1st and 3rd battalions carried a fanion, which is a small piece of cloth carried on a short pole that was attached to a rifle (in 15mm, the Old Glory command packs have figures for this – they look like long bayonets at first glance). I can't find my reference for the size and color, I believe the 1st battalion's fanion was red and the 3rd was blue over white. They were much smaller than the standard Hopefully someone will jump in with the exact reference. |
