Currently, I'm using the terms "Supporting Member" (for paid memberships) and "Non-Supporting Member" (for free memberships). However, it's been pointed out that "non-supporting" sort of sounds like "freeloader," which isn't what I want to communicate. Nobody's complained about Supporting Member - probably since it does seem preferable to things like Premium Member or Flagship Member. :-) So - any suggestions for better terms? |
Hundvig | 23 Jan 2004 8:28 a.m. PST |
How about just Basic and Supporting Members? Basic isn't really offensive, I think...but being called a "member" of any kind is clearly a penis joke. :) |

University societies tend to use "member" and "associate member". The second form tends to get shortened to "associate" |
Parzival | 23 Jan 2004 8:41 a.m. PST |
"Generals" and "Lieutenants" "Kings" and "Warriors" "Knights" and "Sergeants" "Captains" and "Troopers" "Senators" and "Tribunes" "Emperors" and "Plebians" "Czars" and "Serfs" "Emirs" and "Infidels" "Lords" and "Peasants" "Special" and "Average" "Rich" and "Poor" All of the above offered in jest, naturally! :-) Okay, seriously, I have no problem with "Supporting Member" and "Member". The distinction is quite clear, and not at all demeaning to the average Joe or Jane who can't currently put TMP in their budget. --- Parzival, who for the time being must remain starless. |

I'm fine with 'supporting' and 'basic', or just 'member'. |

Can I be called Big member Vs. the other little members. My wife would really be happy. |
Gav Tyler | 23 Jan 2004 9:39 a.m. PST |
"Supporting Member" and "member" sounds the best to me! |
Lukash | 23 Jan 2004 9:54 a.m. PST |
I just became a supporting member(?) which sounds like something sexaul. How about something else? Darn, I see PaintGod beat me to it. |
CorpCommander | 23 Jan 2004 9:55 a.m. PST |
"Supporting Member" and "Member" "Officer" and "Cannon Fodder" "Demi-God" and "Insect" (god is reserved for Bill of course!) "Benefactor" and "Sturdy Beggar" "Hardcore Member" and "Mundane" "Immortal" and "Not Long for this World" |
RavenscraftCybernetics | 23 Jan 2004 10:13 a.m. PST |
The Haves & the Have nots? that seems to be the dividing distinction. =P seriously though, you might consider referring to the paid members as Sponsors. |

One of the theatres out here talks about memberships as Gold, Silver, and Bronze, with levels above Gold getting really spiffy names. We could go with Silver and Bronze for now, knowing that as soon a Bill can think of a new way to seperate us from our money (limited edition figs or whatever), he can add a new level for people who want to be involved in that. |

[Plastic and pewter?] Er, no, because then you'd get into the whole argument of the superiorty of soft plastic figures versus metal figures. 8) -- Tim aka PLASTIC FANTASTIC |

"Member" seems sufficient to me... |

[Plastic and pewter?] I like it, we could also go and say 15mm plastic. and pewter 15mm or 25mm or 54mm as per how much was paid. once again thanks to the editor for giving up his sanity for this web site. |

Supporting and Basic work for me. Though Plastic & Pewter are more in keeping with the spirit of TMP, I agree that it implies a lack of quality on the plastic ones.(I prefer metal figs myself). Question, would Blood Bowl fanatics who pay their $25 become Athletic Supporters? Ducking, running and grinning, Wyatt |

I'm more concerned that paid members will start getting an attitude toward non-paid members. Tread lightly, my friends. We don't need any 'brown shirts' at here TMP. |

Whats with the class distinction in the first place? Aren't the little stars by the name enough? If there has to be a name then how about Paying and non-paying members. This is what the distinction is about after all; those who have graciously donated their money and those who for whatever reason have not. GDM |
Neotacha | 23 Jan 2004 3:15 p.m. PST |
Just call us Nuts and Bolts -- we're all getting a little screwy. Why not just call us all members? I don't need a particular title beyond what I see as people's identity. Don't really need the stars, either. They don't change whether I think someone's posts are fantastic and useful or scrimy and just plain mean. Tacha |
DJCoaltrain | 23 Jan 2004 3:32 p.m. PST |
Just use the phrase "Members." I think that very neatly encompasses all of us. I shouldn't like to differentiate between contributors simply because some sent in money and others didn't. Besides those of us who were able to contribute financially really enjoy the "Girls Gone Wild" video in the VIP lounge. Ooopps, wrong VIP lounge. Sorry, excuse me, sorry, I'm so embarassed. |
HobbyGuy | 23 Jan 2004 4:33 p.m. PST |
Just call us non-supporting members "Idiots" so at least we know where we stand.

No fair! Clearly DJ Coaltrain got first dibs on the Paris Hilton 54mm scratch and sniff commemorative 1815 Hundred Days Grenadier a Cheval fantasy biker babe figures available to all we TMP Oligarchs. I kind of like proletariat and plutocrat but otherwise, just using members for all works best. |
Goldalene | 23 Jan 2004 4:41 p.m. PST |
I favour member and associate member. 'Supporting' makes it sound like the only way you can support TMP is to give money, as opposed to help maintain a wide and diverse community and maybe sending contributions in, etc. Alas, several posts (and the sheer size of the donation icon) suggest we have already lost the classless TMP. |

Those that pay "hubris". Those who cannot "pathos". The Editor "Deus Ex Machina". |
Dave Winfree | 23 Jan 2004 4:54 p.m. PST |
'Paid' vs. 'Complementary' member? Another idea, that both paid/unpaid status be noted no higher than a recognition of 'seniority'. Perhaps a star of a color denotes paid/unpaid, but another symbol denotes seniority of membership in some terms of months/years. While seniority itself does not make for overt contributions, recognition of folks' time with TMP is. Food for thought, my 2 cents worth. Dave Winfree Hastings, Michigan |
