What about 'Le Bossu'. The sword-play is stunning.

For brutality and the sheer bravura of its 1-take length, I favor the Korean film _Old Boy_:

Thanks for the many great links everyone!

I'll second the Hammer/hallway fight from Oldboy. The movie is soooo wrong….. but that fight scene is great. Just before the fight the hammer/teeth torture scene is something to see as well (Not for the squemish)

wolvermonkey05 May 2009 8:55 a.m. PST

Ya know I've got the whole manga series for Old Boy and I haven't even read it yet.

cloudcaptain05 May 2009 9:57 a.m. PST

I had forgotten about Oldboy…mainly to protect my mind from the disturbing aspects. That hammer scene is indeed awesome. I almost passed out from laughing while trying to express amazement at the same time.

It wasn't strictly hand to hand but the end of the movie, "The Kingdom" had a great fight scene.

evilcartoonist05 May 2009 1:41 p.m. PST

OH! How could I forget Old Boy with that fantastic long-take fight in the halway. THAT was fantastic (as far as hand-to-hand combat goes.)
I think that may trump They Live. I guess I'll have to rent and watch both to be sure which wins in my book.

A few oddities that were well filmed, if not necessarily "real" fights.

Ripley and the Cargo Loader vs Mama, end of Aliens.

"Tea House, with Spears, in the Rain", from Hero.

The 70s Three Musketeers (especially early on when the Cardinal's Guard interrupts D'Artanian's duel with the Musketeers), The 13th Warrior (fight in the big building), another vote for Last of the Mohicans, the interruption of the African warlords butchering of the bad guy's girlfriend in the recent Casino Royale.

Bruce Lee fighting Chuck Norris was a classic for me.

Peter Blood (Errol Flynn) v. Lavesseur (Basil Rathbone) in Captain Blood.

The Final fight scene in Highlander the movie
the fight in the duelists when they are fighting on foot with sabers.
When the injured Natal Mounted Police Swiss Corpral comes out and saves Lt. Chard.
the fight in the end of ivanhoe the old movie

The final swordfight in Rob Roy is my favorite.

River's last stand in Serenity made shout "GO RIVER" in a crowded theatre. When Serenity's crew opened the blast door's and River was standing with dozen's of dead Reaver's around while Fed marines were shouting at them to surrender she gives Malcolm a "shall I kill them too" look that just floored me.

The knife fight where Pvt Melish is killed in SPR was horrifically brutal. You truly got the sense that they were both fighting for their lives. Anyhoo Salut y'all!

Another shout for River vs the Reavers.
Agent Smith vs Neo in the subway.
In Kingdom of Heaven the Ambush on Liam Nielsons camp, the Norse guy still fighting with an arrow in His throat, awsome!

mattspooner: I had forgotten about The Quiet Man. I was going to vote for McClintock at the mud pit.

Bugs Bunny vs. The operatic Tenor wasn't so physical, until the Hollywood Bowl starting crashing down around his ears.
Now, that was classic!.

This was before such graphic violence, but the two sides rushing towards each other in No Man Is An Island (I think), with Jeffrey Hunter, who is raised by Japanese Americans after his parents die.

The assault on Pork Chop Hill, with Gregory Peck.

Glory, but more the scene when the Confederate dismounted cavalry emerging from the fog.

Gettysburg, particularly the panoramic view from the Angle of the troops forming up. But all of the battle scenes were
pretty graphic (read believeable).

Yes, Viggio in the shower.

The Last of The Mohicans, most recent version?

You mean when Leathestocking is running forward and fires two 18th century flintlock muskets from the hip while at a full gallop, leaps over a rock and gets two hits?

That Last of the Mohicans?

One of the all-time worse movies ever devised by Hollywood, and I usually stick up for Hollywood as being in the entertainment business, and not in the business of historical accuracy.

What's her name was the one in love with the young Indian and threw herself off the cliff when he was killed.
The younger sister was completely catatonic from her experiences and was unaware of anything.
