Well while up in the attic I looked around for my boxes on civil war books to put up in my game shop. One box was full of civil war navy books but the prize was with one. I had forgotten that I was given by a close friend back in the 70's a first edition of Admiral David Porters "Naval History of the Civil War" Signed. It now rest in the house in a special place. |

well it also has maps in it that says reduce to fit pages and they are two page maps of different battles with positions of ships and such. I think this is more than just a first edition. There are ships with full crew names for all the battles. the ships commanders and officer crew. Tons of reports from Jr. officers of ships and drawings galore. it is about 4 inches thick. It is one heck of a resource book |

That's quite a find. Bear in mind that Porter's history is about as self-serving as Caesar's Gallic War texts. Still lots of good detail in there. I picked up a soft bound re-print in Gettysburg in '07. |

i cannot believe you would spread such rumors about Gaius Julius Caesar's intentions when writing his Gallic Wars! Such beautifully written examples of the impartial historian's art. . . ok, even I cannot keep that up :~) |

NO WAY!!! I dont think he would write any thing that was not true!!!! But anyway. I took it to a friend who deals in old books. He said it was printed in 1885 but mine is marked 1884 and seems to have been some sort of first binding because the extra prints in it are marked as to be added. and are seperate from any pages. But to say the least it is not in the best of condition but just the fact that I have got a signed editon should bring some value to it. |

Get it to someone knowledgeable about old books to find out exactly what you have, but don't let it out of your sight! |
