Who makes a good train compatible with 28mm Artizan, Dixon, and OG.? I am not interested in high accuracy, great size, or lots of track. I only want enough to stage a couple of train robberies and a few other scenarios involving the good old iron horse.
Thanks, ALV

Doesn't Dixon make a train?

You could dig up a cheap O-gauge (37mm) train. If you don't mind being a bit under-scale, you could go with OO-gauge.

I think Dixon does but Dixon is near impossible to get in the US. The OO might work. I wouldn't mind one slightly oversized.

Try the Goldlok Western train set. They scale just fine to 28mm.

I'm pretty sure that Goldlok and Fastlane are actually the same trains, just packaged differently. And they are GREAT for Western gaming. A little paint and they really clean up nicely. In fact, they work better than O-Scale trains because the O-Scale trains have the third rail, which doesn't look very realistic on the table.

Not to nit pick, but the Goldlok/Fastlane engine and cars look nothing like anything that was ever used by any US railroad. Possibly European (or their colonies) but definitely NOT US..

Coastal2,

You have to be patient and look around.

While most of their trains don't fit, I did pick up a fine Western train under the Goldlok name.

Dixon is the best, but getting it here to the states in one piece is next to impossible. The boxes seem to have a big bullseye on them for whoever is carrying them.

Bachman On30 – O gauge locomotives that fit on HO track, a good variety of later Western US locomotives plus all sorts of rolling stock.

There are quite a few discounters of Bachmann out there in the US, plus if/when you no longer want the train it should be easier to re-sell as you would also have model railroaders interested as well as wargamers.

I will try for Dixon and Bachman but the Goldlok/Fastlane look good also. Thanks

If you're not a card stock snob, Dover Publications makes a an S Guage (1:64, which is to say "28mm") "Western Train" complete with station, water tower, etc, in build-it-yourself form.

It's in full color, comes with paper track (which can be rendered into full 3D with a little work), and has several cars, as well as Tender and Caboose. It is definitly an American train, not European at all, and would be more authentic in your Western games than most Hollywood movies are in this regard.

It assembles surprisingly easy, and is a remarkably good looking product for only a few dollars.

You can buy it from the Dover Website within minutes from now and have it ready to play with in 10 days, if not less.

A very satisfied owner,

TVAG

I am not a bit snobby towards cardstock. My western town is made entirely out of White Wash City models reinforced with coffee stirrers. That would be just what I need. Thanks a lot!

coastal2: Agreed. There are a few in the line that pass for Western trains. You just need to search them out.

Gamer,
If you check with your local railroad store, they might have a broken locomotive that is really not worth fixing cost wise and they would sell it to you for a small amount.
I have done this a couple of times in HO scale since I didn't need a runner.
Natokina.
