Hi folks
I have recently moved to the Tri-Cities area of Tennessee and cannot find any wargamers in the area. When I ask, the locals say that they have never heard of such a thing!

I have joined the HMGS Mid -South who are great but they are centred on Nashville which is a bit too far to go every week for a game.

Can anyone out there help. That is if there IS anyone out there ………… :~)

You moved to one of my favorite spots on earth, but gaming is likely slim. Knoxville might be your best bet. (Asheville is also about 2 hrs but they lost their last game store last year.)

I would not try the haul to Nashville for routine gaming. High Point NC has an annual convention, MACE, and Charlotte has a convention(s) each year at the 3 hour distance. 4 hours to Raleigh and the two conventions there… Spring Fever and Southern Front.

Thanks for the info. I will look into the conventions you mentioned and in the mean time hope that I can find a group not too far off.

Thanks again

I know a couple of people up there. Not regular gamers anymore but they have friends in other areas (mine) who do and may know others up there. I'll check. Might be a few days though.

I remember some game stores in Kingsport, where my parents live. I haven't been in one in years, but they had some RPGs and some different kinds of minis there.

I'd guess that Johnson City might have something, with ETSU there. Looks like they have a Gaming Society, and they might point you to something.

It's a few years old, but you might check out the groups he mentions: link

We still have weekly ( twice weekly )gaming at Virtual Ambush in Asheville, historical multiplayer gaming is alive and well in WNC.

Being a former resident, something I don't admit to often.
East Tennessee is loaded with gamers, the problem is they tend to be isolated. Driving some distance in the area for a good game is not uncommon. Here are a few leads that might help.
Dwayne's World Comics has a large following of gamers that might be able to link you to other gamers in the area. Dwayne's a good guy and may be able to lead you to other players.

Johnson City had a place, in the mall several years ago but I think it closed up.
You are lucky to be with in driving distance of McKay's used books in Knoxville. A treasure trove of used gaming books, media and books.
Knoxville also has Sci-Fi City 3000 Knoxville Center Dr
Knoxville, TN 37924 865) 523-4700. it used to be Gameboard when I worked there but hasn't changed stock to much.
West town Mall (Knoxville) also had a shop on the back side but I'm not sure it is still there.

There used to be two stores in Kingsport. DeWaynes World (I think was one store's name – "down town" location by the antique stores). The other was on the main drag but can't remember its name. Don't know if these are still in operation since it's been about 6-7 years ago.

West town Mall (Knoxville) also had a shop on the back side but I'm not sure it is still there.

Nord's Games was still there when we went through last summer, and it pops up in Google Maps.

You can always call to see if they're still around.

Good supply of gamer type board games, and IIRC they carry GW, Reaper and some other fantasy and sci-fi minis and paints. No historical minis that I remember.

What about Chattanooga?

Looks like DeWaynes World still exists. Dunno if they have game stuff any more but it's in their name and you've got an address & phone number now :)

Hi Guys
Thank you for the wonderful response to my plea. I will begin investigating your leads.

Thank you all

Hope you find some fellow gamers. Wife and I are talking about retiring in/around Kingsport when I retire in five years.

Ricardo18 Apr 2009 6:37 a.m. PST

Dear Privateer
We have just moved to Jonesborough so keep in touch and maybe we could do some gaming in the future.

Rwphillipsstl,

Chattanooga and Nashville are about 1˝ hours from Knoxville. The heart of the Tri-Cities area is about 1˝ hours from Knoxville. Tennessee may be short north to south but it's a bear east to west.

Chattanooga and Nashville are about 1˝ hours from Knoxville.

"1˝ hours!?!" Who are you, State Senator John Ford? wink

More like 2-2˝ hours to Nashville.

(For those not from Tennessee, John Ford (D) of Memphis became famous— or infamous— for telling troopers they couldn't give him speeding tickets on the interstate because he was in the state legislature. He is now serving time after being convicted in a federal bribery sting. I've seen the video from the sting; the man was practically drooling as the money was counted in front of him. A real piece of work, is Sen. Ford… grin)

Chris Wimbrow21 Apr 2009 11:26 a.m. PST

Quite right. I lost an hour somewhere. It's Cookeville or near to it that has me halfway back to Tullahoma, a 3 hour tour.

Yankyaeger23 Apr 2009 1:43 p.m. PST

Cleveland Tn (just 30 minutes North of Chatanooga) has Dice-head games. They have a good size store in the mall there. I just came back from a business trip to a facility out there, and was fairly impressed with their gaming room.

Look to take some bits there on my "next" business trip, lol!

To the original poster. Your not forgotten. I've heard nothing out of the folks I know from the north east part of the state. My Knoxville friends know of no one still playing in the tri-cities area. If my sources change, I'll let you know.

For those stumbling across this thread, I'm trying to keep on top of East Tennessee miniature gaming at etmw.org

randolph224314 Jan 2024 8:38 p.m. PST

God bless you all! Recently moved to Jonesborough (Tri-Cities area). Interests are most eras of historical gaming. Feel free to reach out.
