For those of you who were unable to attend this year, here is a complete walkthrough of SALUTE 2009 – the annual South London Warlords (UK) event. This is the largest show on the UK's annual wargaming calendar.

The photos show the demo and participation games that were staged throughout the one-day event (Saturday 28th March) at the prestigious EXCEL Centre in London's Docklands.

To give you a more complete walkthrough experience, I've interspersed photos of the trade stands among the demo & participation games.

Due to the large number of photos I took, I have posted my Salute 2009 walkthrough in FOUR PARTS. They can be accessed via these links:

SALUTE 2009 – PART ONE
link

SALUTE 2009 – PART TWO
link

SALUTE 2009 – PART THREE

Please feel free to post corrections, updates, and any additional information you may have about the photos and the event.

Anton: I was about to ask the same damned question. My 10 year old loves those things, and they are rare as hen's teeth.

Joe Dever29 Mar 2009 9:25 p.m. PST

To Anton & Jwomack94: Yes, I'm the author of the Lone Wolf gamebooks. Thanks for your kind comments, much appreciated. For info about the new Lone Wolf collector's editions from Mongoose Publishing, check this link:

Joe Brilliant images. Thanks you and once again confirms that I missed quite a bit on the day.

You asked for amends:
Image captioned as Doms decals is Raiden miniatures and the Copplestone captioned image is Doms Decals, Dom in black, WoW models on table with air gaming rules.

Great work and pictures!

Thank you!

A beautiful amount of pictures !
And thanks for the Lone Wolf books also.

p.s. the link on the first page, under the "Black Cat Bases" photo, is for "Black "HAT" Miniautres". You also call them the same, an easy mistake with the sheer amount of photos youve uploaded. :)

Nice pictures!

Patrick R30 Mar 2009 2:45 a.m. PST

Too bad my batteries had run out (and there was a huge concession stand in the basement area)

Good job on the pictures !!!

BigLee30 Mar 2009 3:28 a.m. PST

Great pictures, well done getting them up so quick.

1ngram30 Mar 2009 3:35 a.m. PST

Were there really no ancient games at all?

The Picktree Brag30 Mar 2009 3:38 a.m. PST

Great show, but I was a little disappointed by the games on show in that there was very little variety in the periods people were doing.

royaleddy30 Mar 2009 3:40 a.m. PST

"Were there really no ancient games at all?"

check the pics again.
the SOA were clearly doing a big hellenistic game.

CptKremmen30 Mar 2009 3:45 a.m. PST

Thanks for taking those photos, really inspirational stuff

John Treadaway30 Mar 2009 3:55 a.m. PST

Joe

That is a fantastic set of pictures and I hate you…

But seriously, as someone running a game during the day and thankful for the time I got off to walk round and buy something and take a few pics, I am at the same time deeply envious of both your lesmanship and the opportunity you had to take the shots and MASSIVELY thankful that I can see the bits of the show I missed.

I had the best of three worlds: I went to Salute, I ran a game for people AND via your shots I missed NOTHING!

And I didn't even get to spend too much!!!!

John T

PS – the Warlords MaK SF3D game was 1/35th rather than 28mm

CthulhuPunk30 Mar 2009 4:11 a.m. PST

Many thanks for these Joe.
And like others before me, many thanks for the Lone Wolf books – an important and influential part of my childhood.
:)

christot30 Mar 2009 4:26 a.m. PST

Thanks for these Joe…(I took my camera, and then forgot to take any pics……dear oh dear).
A pleasure to see you again. Take care,
Cheers Chris

Insomniac30 Mar 2009 4:32 a.m. PST

Thanks for all the photos…I was gutted I couldn't go and now, it's like I was there!

Just to let you know that the 'un-named'game – Pic 041& 042 – are of the Twilight game from Hasslefree miniatures.

Andoreth30 Mar 2009 4:34 a.m. PST

Thanks for all the effort, and thanks in particular for the shots of our game (AK47 Guine Bissau).

Thanks a lot for the report Joe. It's excellent.

Marcus Ulpius Trajanus30 Mar 2009 4:48 a.m. PST

Were there really no ancient games at all?

We should be there!

We had a 12x6 Late Roman v Sassanid going on, which the world and his mate took pictures of!

Can't check Joe's camera work at the moment, as the firm's Site Blocker gets in the way. I'll look when I get home

Will be choked if we were missed out!

noraneko30 Mar 2009 5:00 a.m. PST

Very cool.

Lowtardog30 Mar 2009 5:07 a.m. PST

There were a coupleo f Ancients games, the Roman Sassanid game and I am sure I saw hordes of celts running around too

thehawk30 Mar 2009 5:10 a.m. PST

Many thanks – and shots are great quality. What camera did you use?

Joe Dever30 Mar 2009 5:52 a.m. PST

Gaz004530 Mar 2009 6:09 a.m. PST

Great photos! Again many thanks for posting them all!
Rivet counting……listed as 'EM4 Miniatures' is actually 'Grubby Tanks'- excellent piccies all the same!!

Doug em4miniatures30 Mar 2009 6:20 a.m. PST

Very impressive -enables me to see all those games I missed (which was most of them – couldn't get awayfrom the stand for more than a couple of minutes).

The pic in Part 3 labelled em4miniatures is, I think Grubby Tanks. Regrettably,I am not the handsome gentleman with the tatoos.

John Treadaway30 Mar 2009 6:24 a.m. PST

I took shots of at least one ancients game (bottom row centre and bottom row right corner on this page link

Hastati30 Mar 2009 7:14 a.m. PST

The Late Roman v. Sassanids game using Warmaster was excellent. The terrain was basic wargames standard but the painting on the figures (including hand painted shields) was fantastic and I was very surprised to find out the figures were by Old Glory. I had a very nice chat with the guys running the game and they did something that most displays did not, they engaged the passerby and even handed stands of figures over to be looked at. Very commendable.

TredHedJon30 Mar 2009 7:16 a.m. PST

Joe, three things:

1) Thanks for the wonderful Lone Wolf books…several friends and I have enjoyed them over the years.

2) Thank you so much for this photo tour….It will probably be a long time before I can ever make it across the pond to check out Salute. This was almost like being there.

3) '041: Fantasy participation game (unlisted)' was a game called Twilight. Its an upcoming 'non-standard' fantasy game soon to be released through Hasslefree Miniatures.

Again…thanks for the photo-tour…it is making my Monday morning much more bearable =)

essayons730 Mar 2009 7:16 a.m. PST
