I played a French v. British early ironclads game using Iron and Fire yesterday.

My flotilla consisting of Normandie, Magenta, Solferino and Onondaga (the latter a Langton model) was outnumbered by my opponents array of British ships but put up a good fight nonetheless.

So, I'd like to expand my small collection of Skytrex ironclads but as they only produce two, Gloire and Magenta, I'm left with little choice. I can get a couple more of the Gloire but after that I'm stuck.

After some thought, I was wondering if I could convert one of the British warship models to represent a similar French ship.

Initial thoughts are that the Prince Consort with raised Forecastle is similar to a Provence class apart from the two stacks. This would give me the scope to extend my flotilla by half a dozen ships at least.

Has anyone tried a similar conversion?

Do you have any other suggestions along these lines?

Cheers

I found it easier to scratchbuild what I needed. I find little resemblance between British and French ships, and Gloire is a lot closer to Provence than any British ship.

That's what I feared :O(

What do you use as materials for your scratchbuilding and have you got any advice or tips that might save me some time and lacerations?

Cheers

I have an old tutorial here: link

It is for 1/600 ironclads, but you can use the same general methods. Note that I use styrene strips now for bulwarks instead of balsa forms.

Thanks.

That should help me avoid screwing up!

You might consider using HAI's model of Erzherzog Ferd Max as a replacement for the Courone and Alma as a replacement for the Belliquese. Also, don't forget that CSS Stonewall and sistership were French built amd the Rochambeau was originally USS Dunderburg.
