Does anyone make 28mm Gurkas for the late 19th Century? The only ones that I'm familiar with were the old Ral Partha 25mm colonials. Any recommendations?

Foundry; the range is withdrawm but available on request. They were featured on the cover of one issue of HMG magazine.

Castaway has some nice ones and the Old Glory ghurkas are quite nice as well.

Pontooniers out of Milwaukee make excellent ones, but last I looked their website was still unfinished. Give them a call or look for them at Midwest conventions. They are the best 28mm Ghurkas I've seen, and their British are great, too.

I have 2 units (20 figs/per) of OG and one of Foundry painted Ghurkas that I've been thinking of getting rid of since I bought the Pontooniers ones (but I could always use the olders ones as "Bengalis" I suppose), plus I am pretty sure I have a unit or two worth of unpainted OG and Foundry ones. If interested, let me know.

Thanks for the Pontoonier tip on the Ghurkas. Did you say that they also make British infantry? I like their Baden Napoleonics so I'm sure that I would like their colonials.

Thanks for the nod Allen! I rather like the Foundry, but then I haven't seen the Pontoonier figures. Their British infantry are quite pretty, I REALLY wanted to buy some at Historicon but didn't have the money in the budget.
Although I've heard they are hard to get a hold of.

Yes Fritz, they make Brits for the 3rd Burmese War, actually. So they have them wearing the glengarry caps, but also have them in cork helmets (I don't have those, but I recall they are otherwise identical to the ones I have. They also give you a choice of with mustache and without---to distinguish between fusiliers and regulars. I don't think I'd ever read anything about that distinction, but the owner (I forgot his name…very friendly, though) seemed to know what he was talking about.

Fritz,

I'll post pics of my Pontoonier Ghurkas and Brits tonight, if you'd like to see what they look like.

mjkerner: would like to see your pix. Do you have a link?

mjkerner09 Mar 2009 4:12 p.m. PST

Fritz, will post link after I take pics. Brits are painted, the Ghurkas aren't.

Fritz, I hope this works. My digital camera foo needs some work, but I guess they are in focus…sort of.

Oh my, those are nice! I remember the detailing on the Ponoonier rifles as being quite exceptional.

Very nice paint. And yes, the Pontoonier Gurkhas do look great.

So the Pontoonier Brits have Martini's, and it looks like the Ghurkha's have Sniders?

Those are nice looking figures. Thank you for posting them. I am very tempted to buy some of these, but from what I hear, the company isn't very good at communicating with potential clients. I bought some of their Napoleonics at last year's Historicon -- seemed like nice people.

Too bad you didn't come to this a few weeks earlier. You could've purchased them at Little Wars. I blame Bill for being a bad influence on you. 8^D

"…but from what I hear, the company isn't very good at communicating with potential clients."

Very true. I got mine at RockCon last November. The owner and his buddy were two of the nicest fellas you'd ever want to meet. But, I'm less than 90 minutes away (Madison) and tried calling several times and left messages to call me back, so I could find out where their shop is--I had a lot more I wanted to buy--but no one ever got back to me.

Just found this I was desperate topic -- I was DESPERATE TO PURCHASE their Burmese regular troops. I had converted my own 15mm versions as a kid, using Victoria Mounted Rifles spiked helmets on Indian Mutiny native riflemen bodies. Always wanted to find a supplier of purposely designed Burmese regulars for the 3rd Burma War, smack in the middle of my favorite "later 19th Century British colonial" era.

Having graduated to 25mm/28mm in my decade- later-in-life return to the hobby, I was really excited a couple of years back when I stumbled across pics of the prototypes of their Burmese regulars (probably here on TMP) and kept trying to get in touch with them via email, for months… and months… and months.

All for nought. Unfortunately for me -- and them. I'm in Los Angeles, so the chances of me getting to a "Midwest Con" are somewhere between "null" and "void".

I didn't even know they had those excellent glengarry-clad Brits and the Gurkhas to go with them. Argh… the FRUSTRATION!!!
