Or O'Neill's Rebellion, or Elizabeth's Irish War etc. Can anyone recommend any books on the period, whether general history or more specific wargaming stuff? I've got the Osprey, and I'm eyeing Ian Heath's book for Foundry. Anything else you'd recommend? Thanks in advance |

"The Twilight Lords" by Richard Berleth covers the entire Elizabethan struggle. |

From Pike to Shot by Grant, in WRG series of Armies and Enemies line. John Lynn's large text on the wars of Louis XIV (the academic, not Osprey) is worth getting as well. |

There is not that much about considering it was a crucial period in Irish history and the most expensive campaign the Tudors ever fought. Ian Hearh's book is fine. Berleth's book is a lovely read. Hiram Morgan wrote Tyrone's rebellion that is good but suprisingly light on the battles considering he is a Military Historian. M. Kearney Walsh concentrated on the period of exile in her Hugh O'Neil Prince of Ulster. RJ Silke produced the Battle of Kinsale-its ok. Duffy includes an Irish section of this period in his Siege Warfare. A Military History Of Ireland edited by Bartlet and Jeffrey has a chapter on the Nine Years War. Imo Irish Battles by Hayes McCoy, Queen Elizabeth's Irish Wars and Mountjoy Elizabeth's General both by Cyril Falls represent the best buys to date. Hayes McCoy also wrote Scots Military Forces in Ireland but its rare to find it. If you come up with anything else please let me know. I should add Hayes McCoy openly set out to write from an Irish perspective in his books and Cpt Cyril Falls was a Unionist of the ardent persuasion but they knew their stuff! |

I second Cyril Falls "Elizabeth's Irish Wars". I would say Ian Heath's (Armies 16th C) book doesn't bring that much to the table of the Irish, but recommend it as a general late 16th C. source. TPC PS- Just how popular is this period these days? |

My interest was piqued recently by picking my copy of "Irish Battles" off the shelf for a quick bedtime read. The next day by chance I discovered "A Short History of Ireland on BBC Radio 7" which happens to be covering the period at the moment (recommended); link BBC NI (co-production with RTE I think) did a good TV series last year, don't know if its available. Being a Tyrone man I am quickly finding myself drawn into the period! Not that I need another, but that's the nature of wargaming. Elizabeth's Irish Wars seems to be the most cited text, so I'll try to lay my hands on it. Rwphillipsstl; that's the "other" Nine Year's war, which in Ireland is usually called the "War of the Two Kings" to distinguish it, though its only really the Irish campaign of the wider Nine Years War in the 1690s. |

I thought he was referring to the european conflict first, then the Irish campaigns in addition, not specifically just to Irish campaigns. Oh well. Grant is still a good book. |

Thanks for the Link I will have a listen. BTW what figures/scale do you intend to use? |

Rwphillipsstl, we have a mutual interest in that war, thanks for the recommendation on Grant. The Nine Year's War I mean here is an entirely different conflict fought 1594-1603, between the armies of Elizabeth I and a coalition of Gaelic lords (with some Spanish assistance) link As for figures; I'm not 100 percent sure I'm going to game it, I might just read about it. If I do game it I might have to make some figures. Haven't decided yet. |

The world is in serious need of a good 16th Century range of Irish Pike annd Caliver troops. |

I thought Vendel's range looked nice? (not my scale though) |

Nor mine. We need 15mm Caliver men in trews, cota beag or mantle with a morion and a sword. Matchlock did one but its huge and one pose only. Minifigs do a mailed pikeman but one pose only and 25 years old, it shows. |

You may find something useful in this thread (look down to the bibliography I posted
sixth post down, I think): TMP link I've also put together a primer on the era. It can be found in MWAN #129 (if you have access to Magweb), or if you have access to yahoo groups, you can download a pdf of it from the files section of the following yahoo group: link Best, Ed M |
