Hi everyone,
I finally pulled my Peter Pig, "Pieces of Eight" rules out of storage, and tried out the naval battles portion of the rules, just for fun. I have had the rules for decades, and just never got around to giving them a spin, due to a lack of suitable models. I hope to change that situation in the near future, so thought I would give them a go, to see how they work.
I thought you all might enjoy reading about the battle as well, so decided to post it here. I chose a Sloop vs. Brig battle, to make it a little more interesting.
I believe this is the first edition set, that has rules for the old 1/100th scale SDD resin vessels, and is printed on gold colored paper.
Apparently the newer edition has rules for use with their 1/450th scale vessels, and may even include a mini-campaign, of sorts.
The battles turned out to be quite entertaining, for a solo affair.
You can read about the second, more interesting skirmish, by accessing the files section of the PirateWargames Yahoo Group site, under the file titled Battle Reports:

I'll post it to a free, on-line, file sharing site as well, if anyone can recommend a good one, without lots of SPAM.
This battle report comes in two parts, and is complete with a maneuvering chart for both combatants in the game, e.g. an eight-gun Sloop, and a 12 gun Brig.
The first battle pitted two eight-gun sloops against one another, and one side totally dominated the engagement, with excellent gunnery dice rolling.
All in all, the Brig vs. Sloop battle was a quite satisfactory engagement, although I would prefer a set of maneuvering rules that are a bit more like sailing, than driving a motor car, or aircraft around on the tabletop.
I hope to add that for the next game, e.g. something like the rules for Beat to Quarters 4.0.1, but with an eight-point compass instead of using hexes.
I just need to find some relative vessel speeds to use for smaller vessels, like sloops, brigs, sloops of war, cutters, schooner, frigates, merchants, etc.
Enjoy!
Best regards,
Rob
