My Armenian contingent is finished.

Only a few units to base up and the Arab / Seljuks will be finished too. All my fighting units are now painted! The project is almost at an end – finally.

Lovely collection – is inspiring me to start Crusades. Looking forward to seeing all the Islamic forces when finished.

As always, Im so impressed, OK, jealous even. It takes me forever to paint a 28mm Perry fig from this range and even then they don't look as good as yours.
Can I ask? How long does it take you to do ONE foot figure? One cavalry figure?

Hi mghFond,

I'm not sure exactly how long it takes to do a single figure because I paint in batches. With these I did the 21 cavalry as a batch (some of the Islamic cavalry were done in batches of 48 – 60), the spear men were a batch of 40, the archers were a batch of 24. If memory serves I did the infantry over a week (about 12 hours) and the cavalry over a couple of days (about 8 hours). Bish, bash, bosh!

Of course some weeks I don't paint anything for myself. The last three months have been pretty full on to get them finished for deadline (about 4 weeks away) because after that I will not allow myself to paint any more Crusades stuff for myself ever again – the project will be ended. I've not totted up the totals yet, but I think it is somewhere around 1000+ figures including 400 cavalry; two years worth of spare time; I'm disciplined over the course of a project (anal?) – the day I started this one I knew the day I'd finish which helped to concentrate the mind. It looks like I'll actually finish with a couple of days to paint out the odd mistake here and there. Only 2 command stands and baggage to do – about 50 pieces including wagons, cattle, etc.

Your army is absolutely fantastic,, Is there much information available on Armenian armies of that period?

Thanks Olicana!

Batches or not, thats still an awful lot of figures painted and excellently painted at that! I can hardly paint 10mm guys that fast and I do try and set aside some painting time each day if I can possibly do it.
Anyhow thanks for sharing the pics and projects with us!

bigdennis,

No, not much. They were warlike and provided both infantry and cavalry to the various warring states during the Crusades period, especiall Antioch and Edessa. They were described as dour and loved their beards (surprisingly some of the Perry figs don't have them – but I could not be bothered to add them). They produced a lot of Indigo and Saffron (I think the latter?) so I've used a lot of blue and yellow for their clothing.
