I've made a black wash using the the following recipe from one of Dom's painting guides: 25 parts Johnson's Klear to 1 part Citadel Chaos Black paint This works pretty good, however I found the pigment separates and leaves little flecks of black floating around. Could this be done using black ink vs paint? --Tom |

I would think that 1) yo need to dilute it with water. I always use at least a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio of water to Future. Straight future seems to suspend the pigment too much so that it doesn't settle. Also, you need to a drop of dishwashing detergent or rubbing alcohol break the surface tension of the wash. Otherwise, you tend to get rings or the dreaded "tide-line" of ink because it doesn't fully settle into the crevices. |

I prefer 4/1 water to clear and a few drops of black ink. |

Yes. I used black ink to make mine. I dilute with water and I use about 5 parts Klear. |

Yes – use ink. I use either black india ink, or brown ink made by Renaissance Inks. |

Ink for the wash – dilute your future with water – distilled water preferably so you don't get any strange chemical reactions if you have poor water! |

I never use water. When I trieed my results were poor. But I also use ONLY ink. A few drops of ink go a VERY long way. Mix and apply to a scrap fig. Too dark add more Future. Too thin add a drop or two more ink. You also can add water to the fig you are using to remove the wash. Thanks, John |

I rarely experience "tide lines", though when it seems that when it does occur, it all happens it the same manner in the same spots in my assembly line minis. Maybe it depends on individual paints/colors, because my magic wash (roughly 3:1) stained every single pale grey coat on my SYW French. |

I wonder if it might be your brush. I have found that Klear works loose any little bits of paint and grot that are lodged in the bristles at the top, near the ferrule. Might be worth trying a fresh brush. I also tend to use inks. |

I've found the best results with inks not paints. |

I use straight future with India ink. |

Thanks for all your input guys. I went with straight ink and future, it worked out great. --Tom |
