Hi,

We are halfway through the battle. We are going to finish it next week.

The Indians see a chance to complete wreck the cavalry in this battle and want to continue.

Some highlights and lowlights from the first 5 turns:
7th Cavalry nearly destroyed
Oglala warbands counting coup several times.
Swirling movements
4th cavalry finally arriving on turn 4 instead of turn 2.
Hunkpapa and Oglala reinforcements arrive.
Uncontrolled charges, undisciplined fire, sneaky hethens
No Crushing volley yet for the cavalry
7th cavalry commander can't roll to save his life.

The 4th is in great shape, but warbands are everywhere!

The battle is still in the balance.
Eric
PS – Lots of photos taken.

To Bob – Your boys have been stalking, mostly. They have not drawn blood yet, but have been shot.

To Custer – big drat. The 7th cavalry has been completely devastated in this campaign. It is ugly.

To jdg – I will try to post some to the website, but the files are large (better digital camera). If you like, send me an email directly and I can send you a couple. EBurgess@Carolina.rr.com

I warned about the Cavalry taking another smackdown.

Pics, we say! :-D

Thanks,

The battle isn't over … yet. The cavalry can still redeem themselves, but the odds are much worse.

Hi folks,

The cavalry was able to own the battlefield at the conclusion of the game, but at what cost? Several of their units were overrun in melee, and a couple more routed. Oglala chief He-Dog counted many coup and drew much white man blood.

VP totals for the battle:
Oglala 7VP
4th Cavalry 3VP
7th Cavalry 2VP
Blackfeet 1VP

So, although the cavalry "won" the battle the Indians really hurt the cavalry. When I roll for casualties the true nature of the battle will take shape.

Lots of photos taken, but I will be offline for a while.

If you want some photos let me know: EBurgess@Carolina.rr.com

The 4th cavalry literally saved the day in this one. Good use of dismounted units in skirmish formation aided by a Heroic Crushing Volley card at the opportune time. Some Indians having to do an Uncontrolled Charge didn't help. Some rash young braves charged into the teeth of the blue coats. They did survive the encounter, even disording one unit of cavalry via skirmish fire. Their two counting coup attempts failed miserably though.

It was a really interesting and swirling battle.

We shall see how the casualties will affect the direction of the campaign. The 4th should be nearly intact. The 5th is close by, but the 7th could be nearly out of the campaign and could be guarding supplies the rest of the campaign. :-)

Oh, the 7th commander (Major Minor) on the field was cut down and killed by the Indians.

The 7th Commander being killed sorta figures. :-D I guess the Cavalry Commanders finally figured things out. Love to see the pics. If you wanna mess with your players have them face the Nez Perce. That'll scare the bejeesus out of them! ;-D

Thanks,

John

The cavalry have enough problems. :-)

BTW, it is unlikely that I will get the photos out any time soon. Sorry.

After nearly a month off, we are back on the attack with this campaign. Still lots of fighting left to do.
