"how many of us use regulating battalions in their rules?" Topic

I will again be of very little use as I am unable to cite, but nevertheless this is what I remember from many years ago from a booklet on Crimean War battles. At Alma, the left of the advancing English line (several battalions) stopped and formed squares because of a perceived danger from Russian cavalry. The rest of the line proceeded onward.
We could attempt to create a list of possible actions by different levels of command, perhaps a battalion commander can form square or dispatch skirmishers, brigade commander has some influence on formation or could maybe give a secondary task to some unit. Squadron commander may retreat his unit to redress ranks. I am just guessing here, I never did research the issue. It could depend on doctrine or personal characteristics of the commander and his superior.
And when a situation questioned the previous order, just factor everything up, similarly to how it is done in Ironbow.
It need not be a comprehensive or complicated list. And would slow maneuvers, emphasize need for reserves, give purpose to individual squadrons distributed throughout infantry. Nice.
