Well I've taken the plunge and purchased a load of NavWar ACW ships from The Last Square. How do most of you out there in TMP land model your terrain for river actions? Simple, easy, cheap and visually pleasing are what I am looking for.

Thanks for any advice you care to share.

Here are some more ways from our group's web site:

These first two are 15mm ACW naval battles:

This one is Victorian Colonial era:

And this one tells how I made the terrain for the above battle, including how I simulated the water in the Green Nile.

Nothing too fancy:

My wife came up with a method when I first got into setting up ironclad games.

Step 1

Simply lay down scraps of cloth cut from spare ends that you can find at Wal-Mart (your profile says you're from my wife's home state of Mich) in the materials department. These can represent various depths.

Or

Use brown or coloured paper painted and appropriately marked.

Step 2

Get a roll of vinyl from Wal-Mart of a fair thickness. You can keep it stored rolled up which will create undulations in it. Roll it out over your table.

You now have a convincing water and the vinyl allows you to push your models without worry of them getting caught on material, etc.

Not ACW, but it could be…

Ditto Bird, your water looks great! I notice you don't base your ships. Makes for a very convincing effect.

Thanks savory – I do base my Napoleonic 1:1200 stuff though, the rigging just makes them too delicate to use unbased.

I will be purchasing a buddy's ACW ships and getting into this genre of gaming. I too appreciate all the tips, as I will be needing to make water and terrain shortly before I try a game.

I will use the River Wars rules developed by Bob Johnson and used at H'con a couple of years ago.

Hey! That vinyl surface really works!

I wonder how well paint would adhere to vinyl, without cracking when the vinyl is rolled-up?
