I see this belief expressed all the time, now in a video: link Would we unite against the common alien enemy or would each nation/faction try to get a bit of an advantage by selling out the others? (particularly if their technology was way, way more advanced than ours) Your thoughts? CC |
cloudcaptain | 24 Feb 2009 5:55 p.m. PST |
Frankly
while we banded together to fight primarily as a whole someone might try and take advantage of the confusion and try and get a leg up on a neighbor for the post-war power struggle. Human nature I guess. |

shelldrake | 24 Feb 2009 6:17 p.m. PST |
Most humans would band together, and then turn on each other as soon as it suited them. sorry
. I have a very poor view about humans. |
Ivan DBA | 24 Feb 2009 6:28 p.m. PST |
Well, native peoples rarely banded together to oppose European colonization
But, although the Europeans must have seemed pretty alien, I think real aliens would be an entirely different proposition. I think most nations would set aside their differences. |

I think aliens smart enough to get here would be smart enough to play us off against each other, or prop up one country to do their dirty work. |

Not if th Aliens offered supremacy on Earth to one nation or 1 group of nations – I have no faith in any group of humans sticking with the pack if that happened. |

My answer to the original question – Not a chance. Look what happened with North American Indians. The killed each other – Mohawk nation performing genocide on the (i forget the tribe) in Canada for rights to trade with the Dutch. Not a chance. We're too intent on besting other groups of people. -- Tim |

Depends more on the aliens attitude to us and what they say and do then it does on our human nature. |
Whatisitgood4atwork | 24 Feb 2009 7:18 p.m. PST |
I agree with BooneC. If they were set on indiscriminate annihilation, then we would all be in the same boat and we'd all be united against them as far as possible. If they operated more like, say, the Romans, and had a divide and conquer strategy, then inevitably some humans would think it a better idea to cooperate. |

We would work together but each faction would be looking at the post war world and want to emerge with higher tech and more people. I could see creating conditions so certain groups died during the conflict. ( i.e. communist partisans in WW2 France and the Warsaw uprising in Poland) |
Tiberius | 24 Feb 2009 8:52 p.m. PST |
seriously, why would aliens allow themselves to be in a fire fight. Seed the planet with a biological agent, and kill humanity off without even a fight. It is only in the movies that the aliens are stupid enough to enter a fire fight allowing us that small chance of winning. (Well the movies have us win 100% of the time) |

We would unite for the initial engagement then spend the rest of the time bickering about the leadership of the forces that the aliens would crush us with ease. Plus, any civilization advanced enough to get to us first would have far superior weapons and equipment that we wouldn't stand a chance. |

There is or was a comicbook about this. I think it was called Drafted. Aliens invade Earth and every able person on the planet was sudenly drafted into a world army to fight them. But I didn't read it just remember the adds for it in the comic catalog. |

"If they were set on indiscriminate annihilation, then we would all be in the same boat and we'd all be united against them as far as possible." Except for the wackos who saw it as Kingdom Come and welcomed it or were at least resigned to it. At least one widely recognized variant of a major religion would do absolutely nothing except gather in their places and wait for the screaming to stop outside. |

"The human species must not be seen as being overly aggressive, we are still hoping to open talks with the visitors." "The destruction of the great satan is a sign the mysterious flying objects are sent by god to smite the unbelievers !" "We are in talks with various other governments in an effort to organize a conference with the purpose of formulating a response and how to coordinate this in the future." "And what if this is a plot for the enemy to make us shoot off our whole nuclear arsenal into the air and leave use completely at their mercy, it's a plot I tell you !" "We surrender unconditionally, we are prepared to cooperate with any means necessary." "It's all our fault, humanity's aggression towards each other is what prompted this attack. We desecrate our environment, despoil the planet and rape nature and you're surprised the aliens step in to fix things ?" "You're all aliens in disguise ! Step away or I'll shoot !" |
Tgerritsen | 25 Feb 2009 6:15 a.m. PST |
If the aliens wanted to take over, and for some reason keep us alive, why would they reveal themselves? Just play us one off the other and seed us with ever increasing tech to do it. We destabilize ourselves, or they sign secret treaties to take what ever they want in full compliance of our governments. The population at large isn't the wiser and they get what they want. Win, win. |

I think Gerrold's War Against the Chtorr series summed it up nicely. Third world countries would accuse America of taking advantage of the situation to be war mongers and trying to use the invasion as an excuse to invade other countries wholesale. Although I think about the book series and wonder what the heck the Brits were up to in that series as Gerrold doesn't write about them

There was a TV series named "V" that dealt with this. THere were plenty of collaborators even though it was shown that the aliens ate humans. Of course, the humans won in the end. Resistance is futile

Initially as has been seen in history in the Americas, Africa and Aisa, the natives (Humans) will not be united. Governments will see if there are any tactical advantages which can be gained by becoming allies of the Aliens. Once the true intent of the Aliens are known, it may well be too late to stem the tide. |

Not a chance. Some would plain not believe there was a threat, others would try to throw their rivals under the bus, and still others would accuse the bigger guys of being the reason why there's a threat or of trying to exploit the situation. Like Blind Old Hag said, we're doomed. |

The storyline could be: 1) Aliens invaded and thanks to their superior technology got a fast victory. Their Supreme Leader makes a speech that ends with the words "Mission accomplished!" 2) The Alien special ambassador in Earth starts a program of "de-humanization". Billions of civil servants are unemployed and very upset with the aliens. The aliens start to suffer terrorist attacks of human insurgents. Firefights usually go well, but the Humans develop new tactics in the form of IEDs. Also they had a clever propaganda machine in the GWW (Galactical Wide Web). The Alien population start to be ed off with the government back home. The Alien hawks propose to nuke the Earth from orbit, but Alien liberals and the Alien Society of Friends of Mankind make clear and vocal their oposition to such measures. The Alien public starts asking when the guys will be back. 3) Sectarian violence menaces to split Human resistance. Humans are more interested in killing between themselves than in killing Aliens. 4) Aliens analists propose a surge to improve security. 5) Aliens leave Earth, totally sick of the imposibility of pacify Mankind. 6) Humans revert to normal: everybody fighting against everybody. |

If the whole of humanity unitied together against an alien invasion
what would happen to this union once the alien threat was removed? "It's my Loc-nar!" |
vtsaogames | 25 Feb 2009 4:33 p.m. PST |
American Indians (North and South) could not put their differences away to unite against Europeans. Same thing with African tribes. For that matter, the Turks in the 16th century had an alliance with the French, so Europeans did a lousy job of uniting against a common enemy. The Venetians were obviously kissing up to the Mongols, just in case. The First Crusade succeeded largely because the Muslims were busy fighting each other. They were only united after being conquered by one faction. I fear we have a lousy record as a species. |

I think the aliens would just turn as and say, "Let's not go to Earth, 'tis a silly place." They'd either do the universe a favor and want to kill us all. Or just ignore us for as long as they can. You know like that one kid in class that was always the weird one. |

Traditional Allies would probably stick together. Types like the Taliban, Al Quada, Somali Pirates, etc. would shoot in all directions. The good thing is the media couldn't complain about the Aliens not following the Geneva Conventions !! |
