Alien Surfer made an interesting comment on another thread, one about how far we might send manned missions by 2100.

"(On the moon) something spooked us from any further manned missions beyond our own orbit."
TMP link

I am not into conspiracies but, for SF scenarios, I'll take anything!!!

QUESTION (for SF fun, of course):

IF something was indeed found on the Moon, and it was severe enough to have "spooked us from any further manned missions beyond our own orbit", what could it have been???

I say it was the monolith:

But, what do you say???

Thanks.

Actually, I once decided that if I can ever travel in space and time, one thing I would do is take an old (glass) coke bottle and plant it slightly buried in a location where Apollo 11 would have to find it.

*they finally analyzed the DEEP drill samples from the apollo missions and found CHEESE….(a really CHEAP and smelly brand)…

*cow bones? (erm….the COW didn't make it???)

*alien devices like ones shown in 'Moontrap' with Walter Koenig/'Chekov?'….(that's what got the RUSSIANS that tried to land FIRST!!! remember the 'Zond' probes and the Lunar sample return 'automated' mission that CRASHED about same time as Apollo 11)

*The REAL 'Selenites'…bwah-hah-ha!!!

I liked the "Night Gallery" story on this one.
a rescue mission finds the previous crew had dismantled their ship to build what turns out to be a giant mousetrap.

soulman24 Feb 2009 11:52 a.m. PST

The idea i had about 10+ years ago for a film was..

Modern day, we land on the moon, and are grapped by the selenites from " First man on the moon " , but are saved by the victorians that was still up there, so the key battle at the end of my film, is the British Victorians saving the amercians from the bugs with shotguns etc..!!!

I dream on…

Hmmm…I'm thinking perhaps something along the lines that Hoagland got some of it right…perhaps "more right" than believed…

Explorers find on the moon a bunch of rocks with the words stamped on the other side "Made by GOD". Some one would be freaking out some where and there would be a cover up.

Even better, space squids.

I don't believe we landed on the moon, I think it was a propaganda stunt to scare the Soviets.

From a gaming stand point I would say something along the idea of Hoagland's Mars theory. A lost civilization with survivors in cryo sleep, highly advanced and enough evidence they would be very dangerous if woken up. Its best no to disturb them until our own tech exceeds what they appear to have. Now for the gaming scenario it is decided the risk to recover potential tech out weighs any other consideration. A small team of scientists and marines dispatched on a covert mission to the alien lunar base.

Suppose it was a more political thing . . .

Remember the situation in the early 1970s; The Russians were still interested in competition with the US for political and technological dominance, and a simple hoax could easily be discounted by the combined minds of the opposition, so both groups were still interested. Too, the advanced technology developed from the space programs was also vital to the military and the economy of the two countries . . . And to any *other* country that needed to advance from a low-tech society into a global player.

Suppose that third country was in a position to start a devastating war, possibly with nuclear wepaons, against one of the other fcations. Suppose also that they had a slow-growing technology base that would allow them to enter space not iimmediately, but wihtin a few decades. Now, suppose one more minor thing; That this country had excellent relations with one of the leaders of the other two superpowers.

What DID Nixon say to the Apollo 17 guys when they came back? Somethign along the lines of them being " The last Americans to set foot on the Moon in this century"? Why not say 'men' or 'people'?

Or do peopel like Dragon Gunner agree with many that the Chinese manned space program is also a fake?

Ethics Gradient24 Feb 2009 3:23 p.m. PST

I'm sure I remember an old (pre-apollo) short story where the first astronauts to orbit the moon find the dark side is held up with scaffolding…

alien BLOODY HELL surfer24 Feb 2009 3:37 p.m. PST

CC – the conspiracy theory is that UFO's had been seen on space missions prior to the moon landings, and the astronauts had been warned. When they landed they saw something that had a red glowing 'light' not far from them. As they reported it back there was much uproar/discussion/worry at command, the public feed was cut (if I recall correctly) and the astronauts were very reluctant to do the moon walk. I can't recall the rest off hand but I'll dig it up for you.

Last Hussar24 Feb 2009 3:38 p.m. PST

Perhaps it IS a geocentric universe. The moon is only 167 miles away (and very small). 12 miles beyond that CLUNK as you hit the outer sphere.

I don't believe we landed on the moon, I think it was a propaganda stunt to scare the Soviets.

I hope you aren't serious.

I giant sign carved into the Dark side with an Arrow pointing outward saying "Antimatter Minefield past this point". Or even worse a Giant Arrow pointing inward saying "Let's not go to earth, it's a silly place."

Zephyr124 Feb 2009 4:21 p.m. PST

Might be the fleet of 15-mile wide spaceships parked on the far side that's keeping us away. With our current tech, that would be like an LEM gnat going up against Mt. Everest. Any volunteers…? evil grin

Sundance24 Feb 2009 4:39 p.m. PST

Thinking about it, it must be cats. They're definitely of the alien sort and no doubt had already established a kingdom on the moon…

"I hope you aren't serious."

There is enough evidence for me and unanswered questions to make me doubt it was real. The Van Allen radiation belt would have killed them not to mention radiation bombardment in deep space. I won't go into all the discrepancies you can google some conspiracy sites. Why has no one been back when technology has advanced by leaps and bounds since 1969?

Sargonarhes24 Feb 2009 8:25 p.m. PST

Oh wait a minute guys, what about all those probes we've shot out into space and the outer planets?
But the moon specifically, I remember watching some science show about the moon and the mysterious flashes of light that are randomly seen coming from the moon. Scientists to this day do not know what they are or what is causing them. This gives you a great place to start from, now there really is something going on.

Sergeant Crunch24 Feb 2009 9:09 p.m. PST

OK, did we see something on the moon and haven't gone back or did we not go and it was filmed in Hollywood. These competing conspiracy theories are confusing the heck out of me. Next thing I know somebody will tell me that the CIA knew Kennedy was going to be shot and planted to just "happen" to film it.

Cacique Caribe24 Feb 2009 9:16 p.m. PST

This is too funny . . .

"Did you ever wonder why the Moon landings stopped and why we have not tried to build a Moon Base?"

Look at their explanation:

Guys . . . which astronaut was "Melnick"?

Anyway, I say we (meaning rather you lot as Finns aren't participating in any kind of manned missions much -- as in at all) didn't get spooked at all. We just stopped being so obvious about going about it…

I saw a special on the moon landing conspiracy. The main spokesman lives in an old trailer in the desert.

What really spooked us from going back to the moon was the same thing that keeps me from going back to Tulsa, there's nothing there worth going back for.

blackscribe25 Feb 2009 7:39 a.m. PST

Another guy who claims to have seen structures on the moon:

I was listening to the AM radio late one night and heard some guy (who happens to be the son of one of the Apollo engineers or some such) claim that there is indeed a base on the dark side of the moon. However, it isn't alien -- it is a US military installation established shortly after WWII with captured wehrmacht antigravity technology. How's that for pulp?

tnjrp25 Feb 2009 7:50 a.m. PST

Nah, that's not it… However the Finnish documentary Iron Sky that will be out in a few years time (2010 or so) will spill the real beans about Nazi Germany and Moon:

What?

You say this doesn't gel with my previous post on the subject?

Fancy that…

Dragon Gunner25 Feb 2009 8:17 a.m. PST

"If anyone here buys the conspiracy theories, I've got a bridge to sell you, only slightly used."

Check out some of the theories and answer the questions in a logical manner. Is belief for you tied to emotion or blind trust in authority figures?

jpattern225 Feb 2009 9:24 a.m. PST

Dragon, do some more reading. None of the moon conspiracy theories hold up when carefully examined. I've been reading them for years, and they're all based on misinformation and wild-assed supposition.

If you insist on a pop-culture take on the debunking, check out the Mythbusters episode on the moan hoax. They tackle the "shot in slow motion" theory, the "waving flag" theory, the "photos too well lit" theory, and so on. They debunk them all.

Add to that the fact that I have worked with several people who worked on the Apollo computer systems, one of whom was in Mission Control on July 20, 1969.

We went to the moon. No emotion, no "faith" involved, no blind trust in authority figures.

Col Durnford Supporting Member of TMP25 Feb 2009 9:49 a.m. PST

I have also heard that it was cheaper to go to the moon than to fake it.
