Maybe I'm just a dirty old man, but I've been thinking about creating an Amazon army for use with both WAB and FoG.

At a bare minimum I'd like heavy infantry (armored ala mail or lorica segmenta), skirmishers (probably bow but maybe with slings), and cavalry (I'm thinking mostly light)

So the challenge is creating an actual list – but more challenging is getting figures that can be used for the list! Anyone have any ideas?

With Amazons, it helps to have lots of dough. I tried to collect an army, but it was biting into my wallet faster than a typical GW army…

Try Eureka, and Amazon Miniatures.
Both can be bought in either the Greek or Skythian mode.

For lists, go here:

Shadowforge shadowforge.com.au has a great line but be prepared for the costs.

Fortress Figures also do some in the Greek style, however they ain't that cheap either.

Old Grenadier, now Mirliton/Vexillia, have mail. Some helmets look ancient-ish, while some weapons are more obviously medieval. The ones with bows are unarmored in short tunics:

Mega Miniatures has some "Amazon" sets made up of various Metal Magic/Hobby Products female miniatures. Most are medieval themed, but you might find some useful figures at a low cost:
auction
Mega Miniatures also has some less-cheap Fenryll resin Amazons.

You could try Maidenhead, I have some of their models. I emailed him recently and haven't got an answer, though.
There are light infantry(almost bare) armoured infantry(piecemeal armour which for reasons unkown cover the girls shoulders, tummies, upper back, sometimes wrists and legs but leave their breasts exposed) archers, riders of Sabretooths and Terror birds (can buy girls and beasts seperately, which is good as I don't like the terror birds and the sabretooths don't look very well detailed) and a Wooly Rhino, which looks impressive but makes NO sense at all, even though they are obviously fantasy why would such an unclothed tribe spring up in a climate requiring a beast to be so adapted to the cold?
They also have a Feral Elves range.

Both Shadowforge and Maidenhead are great.

The nice thing about Shadowforge is they have the same type arms with shields as Eureka. I added some of the Shadowforge Dark temple guards. I am going to get some regular shield arms from Eureka and swap them out.

Vojvoda
Warning Eureka and Shadowforge shield arms are not interchangeable. I have a fairly large force of both mixed and although the finished product look very similar the parts were not.

Back to subject.
I have and can recommend a shadowforge.com.au (Dark Temple) mixed with eurekamin.com.au for a city based Amazon army based on a Alexandrian or Greek based army list.

And shadowforge.com.au (tribals) with a mix from lots of small manufactures (there are masses of people do one or two barbarian females but not an army) for a general barbarian army.

Foot Scouts: 6-16
6-8 Average Undrilled Bow Protected Light Foot @6 or Superior at +2/base

MANDATORY MINIMUM AP: 224 AP

ALLIES: ?

NOTES: Geography is around the Black Sea. Amazons, surrounded by realms of men, would be well drilled in the
arts of war. Weaponry depicted as bow, axe and spear. Treating axe as primary weapon used for close combat purposes as qualifying for Swordsmen. While at this time in this region light horse and light foot would normally be Unprotected, Amazons facing armies of men in the field would likely as a matter of policy carry protection.

Warhammer Ancient Battles – Amazon Army List

For thousands of years men have believed an ancient race of attractive women warriors terrorised northern Asia Minor.

From the Siege of Troy to the tales of Herodotus, these Fearsome Beauties have stalked the pages of History, with the titilating tales of them hacking off one breast to improve their archery, and the rumours of the way they make MORE Amazons all adding to their Mystique.

Archaeologists, Historians and nay-sayers have always pooh-poohed these tales, but the Recent 'Playboy Magazine Archaeological Institute' Expedition to Bodrum has unearthed evidence that in fact the stories are TRUE. Except the hacking off one tit story. that's NASTY.

In line with this discover, I can now present an army list for Hot Warrior Women that can be used with a ruleset that really models Ancient Warfare Accurately. And after all, that is what we have always been crying out for.

Special Rules;
Distracting

Nude amazons cause distraction in male opponents. In principal, the thought of using edged or crushing weapons to hack up attractive women strikes most sane men as entirely reasonable, especially if it's my ex-wife. In Practice however, the sight of all that naked female flesh makes most men hesitate – ‘it's a woman after all and – holy hell, she ain't wearing ANY clothes is she? ‘

Any unit of men entering hand to hand combat with Nude Amazons must take a Leadership test. If failed the unit suffers minus 1 to hit for the remainder of the combat. This rule does not apply to Amazons who insist on spoiling things by wearing armour.

Amazon Axe

From their Hittite Neighbours Amazons have developed a fondness for the axe. This is treated as a normal hand weapon, but units armed with them may also use them as throwing weapons, hurling them into their enemy at short range before closing for combat. The Amazon Axe therefore counts as a Heavy Throwing Spear.

0-1 Spent Men

M4 WS1 BS1 S3 T3 W1 I1 A1 LD5 PV2

For some reason, Amazons keep men as slaves in their society.. Archaeologists suspect they may have been used for heavy labour, tilling the fields of perhaps for artisan skills lacking in the Nomadic Amazon Society. Archaeologists don't get out much.

Once the men are worn out, too old, or perhaps start to show some spark of rebellion, what better way of getting rid of them than by herding them into suicidal battle? Of course, the men are unlikely to be too happy about this.
Men count as Levy (subject to FEAR of enemy they do not outnumber by more than 2-to 1)

The Vision Thing – My Vision is of a Special Rule that ACTUALLY affects the Opponent. A sea of Naked Flesh, seething across the board, with the knowledge that it will really mess his Guys up, should do that. I expect this rule to make Wargamers SWEATIER than they already are.

Sane Max16 Feb 2009 5:03 a.m. PST

The above list and sample army won a certain 'Design an Amazon Army List' contest on a Certain Lil'old website I can name.

Pat the modest.

MikeKT16 Feb 2009 6:02 a.m. PST

Indeed it should.

The Light Chariots are not Distracting? Because the chariot horses and frame obstruct enemy LOS?

Sane Max16 Feb 2009 6:04 a.m. PST

Whups, I have just notices it's still available on here – sorry for the Waste of Bandwidth!

Yes, the chariot bits obstruct Line Of Sight . Not fair to have a decent saving throw AND nekkidness

You could always go with the Keltois women of Confrontation. Celtos also has a fair number that would be good champions for Shadowforge or Eureka.

altfritz16 Feb 2009 4:41 p.m. PST

Eureka's "Armies and Enemies of the Petal Throne" range has loads of armoured female warriors in a variety of exotic uniforms and weapons.

I should know – I commissioned them.

Reaper still seems to have some figures in production including a certain spearmaiden (can't remember the name they gave her now) and the Savage Beauty box set.
