Evans' Independent Brigade contained this infantry(?) unit which at 2nd Manassas apparently had 173 men under the colours. Just wondering what the uniform might have been by mid 1862? I have skimmed my Ospreys but it doesn't seem to be mentioned. I suspect the usual mix of grey and butternut, but these guys could be an exception. Thanks for any help

Here is a picture of a member of Holcombe's Legion – looks like he is wearing usual Confederate grey link |

Holcombes served on three months with the ANV. So I would venture to say the uniform was probly of the Columbus Depot cut. In other words a grey to grey brown jacket and trousers. The cavalry portion was absorbed into I think the 2nd SC when it was formed early. No artilery was there so it really became nothing more than a infantry regiment when with the ANV. Hope that helps Peter |

thanks guys, I thought they might be a bit out of the ordinary due to having an interesting name (!), but I am doing Evans Independant Brigade so I they'll get painted up regardless. Well, that is I need one more Brigade to go with Hoods Texan Division (which is not quite big enough for what we are doing) so I thought Evens brigade might be a good 'add on' formation. It was next to Hood during 2nd Manassas I believe. Unless there was some other brigade that may be a sensible choice (maybe an add-hoc attachment during the campaign) if one is looking to add one more brigade to attach to Hood? |

Kind of explain the adding of another brigade to Hoods division. I am confused here. |

Well it's simple. My opponent will be building a Union division of a certain size (3-4 Brigades), I want to build a comparably sized CSA force. Also, I think the rules we will be playing will be more of a challenge/interesting with at least 3 infantry brigades a side. At an average of 16 figures a regiment, building a whole 2nd CSA division in 28mil is far and away more than I want to do at this time, so I came to the natural conclusion that adding Evans Independant Bridage to Hoods Division would be a good way of 'bolstering the numbers' to fit with what my partner and I are doing and give us a good game. Obviously I could have just chosen a different division but I like Hoods division in 62, and happen to have a lot of Texan figures ready to paint

Hello pessa00, Take a look at the info on this site about Evans' Brigade: link I came across it from a posting on the Authentic Campaigner forum so I believe it is reliable. HTH, Ryan |

I went back to the Tramp Brigade site again. Go to the Tramp Brigade Forum and check out the "Uniforms" and "Military Equipment and Arms" folders. The first has QM returns for the Holcombe Legion whereas the latter has details on 1862 flags. Ryan |

Thanks Ryan! That's an excellent resource. A very big help. I am putting all the pieces together finally. I had no idea the uniform and unit research would be so indepth for this period, but it has turned out to be so. Interesting though. Cheers. |
