I just thought I would share some pics of the 28mm scale Middle Eastern buildings I made from cork tiles using Matakishi's methods (thanks Paul). The only difference is I extended the height of all my walls by 10mm and raise the doors and windows by 5mm. So far I have assembled, but not painted, fourteen buildings. I am now working on Modern African and US Urban structures. Take a look and see what you think. link |

Pretty! Can't wait to see what they look like painted. |

Wow, very nicely done! Mine are way more simple than yours are. Please post when they are painted. Thanks, John |

WOW, those look great. Can't wait to see them painted up. Thanks for sharing. |

Those look absolutely fantastic. Jeff |

Very cool. Will you use something to cover up the cork texture or use it as a stucco type texture? |

They are stunning
good stuff! |

Cool! Might have to look into that. Do you have a link on the technique? Great job and can't wait to see them finished! |

Yup Mike, thats the the technique I used. Paul is a great guy and was very nice in answering some of my questions and offering advice early in my project. THANKS PAUL!!! |

Nice! After seeing your work, I've just added a new set of projects to my list
Buildings of this type will work nicely in a Sci-fi setting, so Liam and I will build several. |

and thank you for all the encouraging words. It was quite a feat for me. I accomplished it over several weeks in 30-60 minute chunks, durring my boys tv time before dinner. Deeman – I will most likely use matte house paint in shades of tan and brown and just leave the texture of the cork. From what I can see from the pics at Matakishi's Teahouse that works just fine. Oh, I should also add that the bases for the buildings are custom cut MDF that I purchased from Renaissance Ink. The cork I found at a local Big Lots, but I haven't found any more since then. : ( The good news is I have enough cork tiles to make probably twice again as many buiildings. |

They actually look pretty cool, without the painting. Oh, and I like all the kid stuff in the background. Now I don't feel like I am the only one who can't find any space. Right now the Republic clones are fighting pirates alongside Polly Pocket in my photo space

Excellent work, Cap! I especially like the apartment complex with the stacked balconies. I tried something similar in Super Sculpy but the wait involved caused too much warpage and sag – I'm going to have to give in and give cork a try! |
CeruLucifus | 14 Feb 2009 9:45 a.m. PST |
The buildings look great! I see you are in the US. What was your source for the cork tile? |
Captain Apathy | 14 Feb 2009 10:30 a.m. PST |
donrice – After several failed attempts, I found the right cork tile at a local Big Lots. The tiles I used are Expo Cork Tiles (part # 70468) that are 12"x12"x3/16" thick (roughly 5mm thick). They are a little thicker than the 3mm tiles that Matakishi uses, but otherwise they are great. The only downside is they seem to be discontinued and tough to track down. You might have some luck if you google "expo 70468". Also, make sure you avoid fine grain cork tiles from manufacturers like The Board Dudes. They crumble when you cut them. |

I've always wanted to try making some cork buildings, but I've never been able to find any. Pity, as it seems to be a good building material. |

Nice work Captain. There are a few designs there that I'm going to have to copy for my own building collection. Robert |

These look great! They are going to be a blast to play on I'm sure. Ever since I saw Matakishi's site I have been wondering, what is the advantage / of cork over foam core? Thanks! |
Grumpygamer | 16 Jun 2009 4:58 a.m. PST |
Still a foam-fan here, although your cork stuff does look great. Havent found a disadvantage to foam-based construction yet and its always just a trip to Walmart away should I run low. I game in 28mm and even with the mammoth buildings I use they average maybe $3 USD each including balsa bits, paint etc. |
Dalanshin | 17 Jun 2009 8:29 p.m. PST |
Foam core is easy to get free as well; I picked up a heap of it from an architectural firm; they often toss it after using it for demonstration displays. I'll have to send Matakishi an inquiry
but meanwhile, I look forward to seeing these buildings as they get paint on 'em!! |
Captain Apathy | 10 Jul 2009 1:01 p.m. PST |
Thanks guys. I tried foam core many years ago but it didn't work out. Now that I have had some success with cork I should give the foam core a try again. So far I have only managed to paint one building. Between work, family and a short attention span, I think I am doomed. ; ) I will try to post a picture of the one building I have painted so far. |
