I'm having trouble painting sandbags (British army in France, if it makes any difference). Everything I do looks awful, and I'd really appreciate some tips.

Thanks in advance.

Citadel Kommando Khaki base coat. Then wash with Devlan Mud. You could also try mixing in some Badab Black wash towards the bottom of the sand bags. After everything is dry, a light dry brush of Citadel Bleached Bone should do it for you. While not distinct, you can get the idea from this picture.

Great, thanks. Even better, I have all those in my paint cupboard!

1. base coat black,
2. drybrush with a light brown shade of your choice (sandbag colors vary),
3. then highlight with white.

I use vaj 882 which works well

When the paint is wet, throw on some sand or dirt and shake off the excess especially around the base. Nothing like dirt to simulate dirt.

Thanks for all the advice. I decided to follow Grunt1861's advice and I'm really pleased with the results.
