I have a bunch of Imperial Guard figs I want to strip, is Simple Green a good idea?

Todosi06 Feb 2009 11:07 p.m. PST

Best thing you can use. Soak em overnight in undiluted Simple Green then scrub them with a toothbrush.

Augustus06 Feb 2009 11:54 p.m. PST

Yep very safe. I've had some GW plastics in Simple Green I'd forgotten for about a month or more without issues.

Is this the stuff you use?

I had some GW plastic (specifically shields) submerged in Simple Green for 3 and a half months (forgotten about). Came out just dandy!

Where do you buy Simple Green in the States? Walmart?

Mike G07 Feb 2009 4:28 a.m. PST

You can buy Simple Green at any big box store or automotive parts store.

Thanks Malcom M.

Yes, I've re-discovered some plastic space marines that I've had soaking in Simple Green for over a year. The paint slid right off the minis, the glue bonds gave way but the plastic didn't show any ill effects.

Personally the best thing I have found for stripping plastic is Detol or equivalent brands.

Readily available, doesn't do you any harm and the paint just slides off after a soak and no effect on plastic.

Hybrid07 Feb 2009 6:09 a.m. PST

BravoX, which Dettol do you use?

I just looked in the cleaning cupboard and we have a Dettol Multi Action surface cleaner (green in colour) and also the standard Dettol (antiseptic disinfectant) that has been around for ages.

For me that takes to long I use Easy-off oven claener. the plactic may discolor but it still paints fine.

Yep.

BravoX07 Feb 2009 9:51 a.m. PST

Standard Detol – the antiseptic one, also any generic brand seems to work as well.

It was a recomendation of another TMP'er, I didn't believe it till I tried it, the paint slides of like a skin.

New to plastic figures, would the above discussion apply equally to the various 28mm hard plastics emerging now?

TIA…

Hybrid07 Feb 2009 7:18 p.m. PST

Thanks BravoX.

Yes

Dettol?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dettol

That stuff sounds nasty. I am surprised they sell chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons anymore as disinfectants.

I was amazed on how well this Simple Green stuff work on both metal and plastics.

I had a few figs I painted & sealed back in the '80's and it took the paint right off after an overnight soak!

Great stuff there!
