Zvezda's new set of 17th Century figures reviewed:

Got nice ratings, but IMO, not quite up to Zvezda's usual high standard.

Sadly much bigger than their Revell counterparts, otherwise a very good set.

Look pretty good – I'm sure I'll get a couple of boxes.

The Revell ones aren't available at the moment are they ?

There is a comparison picture at the bottom of the page. The Revell figures are smaller but only by a little. Honestly, we are talking 1.5mm here. That's not that much. I say mix em! grin

The Revell infantry kits were re-released a few years back, and there should be still plenty of them stacked in various hobby stores after that.

I think I will try to pick up a box of these to see how they really look next to the Revell kits – on pictures they look pretty indeed.

Now, if somebody could make Zvezda to also release a matching cavalry set…

Yes, I see Revell sets listed as "in stock" here and there on the web. Regarding mixing Zveda and Revell, I agree with acarhj. Perhaps not the pikemen as the Revell pikes look shorter (although I suppose you could cut the Zvezda pikes). But Zvezda has the pikemen well covered anyway. I'd be real tempted to mix in some of those very nice Revell musketeers. To my eyes, the Zvezda musketeers look like the "weakest link". Are the two loading guys without forked rests supposed to be arquebusiers ? Anyway, still a useful set.

But I'll admit to being disappointed with it. I was really hoping this set would be troops suitable for the latter half of the century: the Siege of Vienna, 1683 or Montecuccoli vs. Turenne.

As for the Revell pikes, I have replaced the plastic pikes on mine with lenghts of steel wire anyway. Going for brass instead would have allowed for making the heads a bit more pointy, though.

Interestingly, the Revell set is a bit too light on the pike, while this set is a bit too heavy.

Good call, Griefbringer. I did that with my Zvezda Macedonian phalangites. Nothing worse than floppy pikes. :)

Anyway, the Revell pikes did not have any sort of heads to begin with. These Zvezda pikes instead seem to have some sort heads on them at the very least.
