WW2?

Are we talking a game here or a new set or rules?

For the Game -- I'm looking for a convenient venue, good folks to play with, a game that can conclude in the time allotted and a nice table. There's rules I will not play but these are a very few.

For Rules -- I'm looking for originality -- there's 10 million sets of rules on the market right now. I'm looking for something my group will like. Doesn't matter too much what I like, if I'm the only one pushing a set of rules, there's no game. Plus I find it's often easier / better to let others take the lead in WWII. I host about 4 games a month as is. That's more than enough.

Slim chance of getting me interested in a new set of rules. Iv'e got too many already.

And IMO some of the newer sets have a fundamental misunderstanding of how small units work in reality. That's really for another thread though.

A designer of a small unit scale rule set would have to overcome that first and foremost to get my attention.

And frankly, since my son is interested in FOW, I'll be going that route for a while.

Higher level rules that give the gamer some of the problems of command
limiting what is available in the way of supplies
trying to win with troops that have been too long at the front already

not just another set of grunt rules

It includes the Pacific War.

Sounds like you need Megablitz!

I like tactical stuff, so the better the rules model maneuver and fire, the more interested I'd be in them.

plasma rifles or arcane magic…

Something simple and quick and pitched at an appropriate command level and which doesn't have a 200 page rulebook or loads of pretty pictures. Two sides of A4 please and some sample scenarios.

I'm assuming you mean a for-pay set. The following are my criteria for dropping $20-50 for a set of rules:

These days, I'd probably first be looking for "what's new" between this and the dozens of other rule sets. Just "not FoW" and "no color pictures" isn't enough for me. And yes, I realize I can play with any miniatures. I wish more rules would explain their uniqueness in the intro paragraphs rather than railing against things. Touting "No other book required" while not providing any historical unit data is weak. A nice summary of the game would help get me interested. What level of game is it? What's the focus?

I don't think lack of clarity is a virtue. Rules don't have to be lawyer-proof, but they should at least make sense and not contradict each other. I'm fine with coming up with a mutual interpretation where necessary, but it helps if the intent is at least clear.

I also don't want to bother with a set that hasn't clearly been playtested extensively… at least not one I'm paying for. At least the basics should be unambiguous.

Let's see… I'm not big on extensive lookup tables. I'm not adverse to any particular mechanisms (e.g. saving rolls), so long as it's not tedious.

For a freebie set, obviously I'm not going to be so critical, and I've downloaded and hoarded dozens of such rules. To be honest, though, I'm mostly cannibalizing them for interesting bits to add to other rules (my own home brew).

Now… I'll gladly PLAY just about anything, and will willingly playtest and such. As long as I'm not preached to and there's a general attitude of enjoyment, I'll play anything in the period.
