I pulled my information from the national archives on the 23rd and found the following from QM report for this time period. From pre september of 62 (sharpsburg) Jackets where issued to the 23rd. along with overcoats and some knapsacks!!!Probly either the boxed Richmond hardpack or the copy of the Mexican war pack. The jacket mentioned did not give a specfic but from my handling of orginals at the MOC of that time period I would say it would be the type II Richmond jacket. Colors would vary as does make up but you can almost bet 95% it was of jean cloth of the light to medium grey or what is known as the sow brown. Pants would be of the grey material also. Richmond was able to send out suits of cloths with no problem. As for the flag I would go with the 2nd bunting that was the orange trim. Why? Because in the spring of that year was the issuance of that bunting and also many where known to be at Sharpsburg with Jacksons Corps. The unit number 23rd Va would be at the center in the red of the saltire. On the 33rd I am going up to the NA within a coupld of weeks and I am going to pull the QM reports for Virginia. While Va did autherize the use of blue as a militia many units did not use it. Instead the grey wool cloth was used and I find this to probly be as such with the 33rd at the time. Hence forth why call oneself GREYS and not have the uniforms as such. Also I noted that just looking through what I have indicates to me that the sources for the so called dark blue uniforms of Jacksons is used over and over again with the same sentances and words. So this tells me as a research historian that one source was taken and was used over and over again. But I will find out shortly. Peter |

Peter, that would be great if you could check the QM records for the 33rd Va. in early 1861. I didn't expect them still to exist. I'm amazed how precisely you can establish the uniform of specific Confederate regiments. |

Zippy I have been in this business for going on 40 years now. There are not to many museums that I have not been in. I have been let loose in the National Army Museum USA. Been in the backroom of the National Army Museum UK and handled artifacts of Napolens and others. Just about spent my whole 30's in the basement of the Museum of the Confedercy and can call Don Triaoni, Les Jensen, Lee Wallace Brian Pohanka (deceased) all good friends. These men are the ones that taught me the ins and outs of researching at the National Archives to the point that I could go in and work in areas that the normal person could not go. Ann NO I DID NOT stuff any papers down my pants or socks!!!!! Did they not used to cut off the hands of thieves!!! But whatever you need zippy or anyone else here feel free to contact me via my e-mail and if I dont know I will find out. griffith-at-gmail-dot-com Peter |

Well, I was just having fun when I raised the question Peter, I didn't mean to send you off on a quest. It's something I'd like to know, but there's no profit in it for your labor. |

Hey not problem zippo! I am here to help out not make a buck. It is my pleasure to assist you all and try to get it right. To many times guys take one reference for gospal. IE Wheats Battalion only one company was so called zouaves. So why make a full battalion. Now if you want a full battalion of Confederate Zouaves use the 1st or 2nd battalion. The 2nd still had uniforms as far as vicksburg. Peter |
