Perhaps it's the pain pills I'm on at the moment, but I've been having really vivid dreams lately. I've been looking around for inspirational sources for my next couple of years' worth of releases, and after reading a bunch of Conan paperbacks, I decided to pick up the D&D "Lords of Madness" sourcebook, covering Aboleths, Mind Flayers, Grell, Beholders, and other aberrations. Reading that book I think is what prompted a dream I had last week – in it I'd build a huge Underdark table, the main feature of which was an Illithid outpost, complete with an Elder Brain. I had dozens of figures on the table, ropers, umber hulks, and various other Underdark and Illithid related figures. The dream has inspired me to collect yet another set of things. Illithids, Mind Flayers. I've always liked them – creepy, freaky monsters, useful for fantasy gaming as well as Pulp Cthulu and even sci-fi stuff (potentially). And they've been making Mind Flayer miniatures for 25+ years now, too. As far as I can tell, nearly every company that's ever had license to make D&D miniatures has made a Mind Flayer figure at some point. I've got a couple of Ral Partha ones, two Reaper "not Mind Flayer" minis, a Grenadier one, and a couple of the current D&D plastic ones. The Otherworld website has a wonderful gallery of the Citadel figures
but I'm sure there must be more. Ebay doesn't have anything currently listed that I don't have yet (although I would like someone to explain "Half-Illithid Lizardfolk" to me
) Can anyone link me to pics of their Mind Flayers, information about old manufacturers, OOP figures (or current "not-illithid" manufacturers). I'm looking for 28mm figs, but a few 20mm or 15mm figs would be OK – I can call them homonculi, or halfling-grown Illithids. I expect I'll update this thread over the next few months, as I collect more figures and paint them. -Alex |

Heritage Dungeon Dwellers had one or two. Great for their time, but a bit small and crude by current standrds. |

There's a not-Illithid from Black Tree as well: picture Damon. |
Alxbates | 23 Jan 2009 11:01 a.m. PST |
Some of the oldest ones might end up doing duty as statues. Good find on the Black Tree one – I never would have thought to look there
but ye gods that's an ugly sculpt. Still, I'm gonna buy it! It might be the angle, or maybe just need a different paint job. Thank you! Keep 'em coming, please! |

The old publishers of Kryomech minis (can't recall the name right now) made a "Bthulu" miniature that was pretty fun. Pretty sure it is OOP now. Superfigs makes a one that might fit the bill: link |

Good luck, Alex. I collect Beholders and not-Beholders, and Umber Hulks and not-Umber Hulks. So far I've been able to obtain 65 different Beholders and 33 different Umber Hulks, and i know there are more out there. I suspect there are almost as many Illithids and not-Illithids out there, if not more, so you have your work cut out for you. I have a lot of them, so I'll pull together a list of what I have and post it later. |

One of my favorites is the one in techno-armor from Magnificent Egos. This is the resin version: link It was also available in metal. I, too, went through a grab-the-evil-octopus-dudes phase. What I found disappointing is that in the 3.0+ art, illithids are depicted as these gaunt, goth, creepy critters with goggles, scalpels, outfits made from black leather, etc. Almost none of the miniatures look like that. They pretty much all look like Gandalf with calamari sticking out of their gobs. If you like the 3.0 look, I'd recommend getting the four available poses of Cephalyx for Warmachine and somehow give them cephalopod heads. A Cephalyx (properly creepy): link |

There are Walktapus from Glorantha/RuneQuest too. Not really the same, but still link (Both Ral Partha and Citadel made one each, as well, IIRC.) You could also perhaps get a 'not-Davy Jones'. I've seen a couple around. Here's Captain Calamari from Tin's Bits picture link

Here are all of the Illithids, not-Illithids, Cthulhoids, Squidoids, and Octopoids that I'm aware of, past and present. I'm probably missing minis from some of the older or smaller companies out there. i'm really surprised that no-one mentioned GW's Genestealer head that has "feeder tentacles" link with these heads you can turn anything into a mindflayer. let alone Privateerpress's game Monsterocalypse has a whole faction of Cthulu's. Called the lords of Cthul. link |

Well with the Cthulhu mythos being public domain, as far as I know, it appears anyone can sculpt critters like this. Also funny Alex, I've been on a mind flayer/illithid/Bathalian/aberration kick lately too. Cheers. |

I can appreciate the necro-lift of this thread, some of the links have broken since but the idea behind the squid faces is a valid one. Certainly one of the best monster to come from the D&D collection of creatures :) |

Not much difference (except in clothes) between Illithids and some Cthulhu cultists:
I'm almost sure I saw similar minis with the hood on: does it ring a bell? Was it indeed in 28mm? |
