Perhaps it's the pain pills I'm on at the moment, but I've been having really vivid dreams lately.

I've been looking around for inspirational sources for my next couple of years' worth of releases, and after reading a bunch of Conan paperbacks, I decided to pick up the D&D "Lords of Madness" sourcebook, covering Aboleths, Mind Flayers, Grell, Beholders, and other aberrations.

Reading that book I think is what prompted a dream I had last week – in it I'd build a huge Underdark table, the main feature of which was an Illithid outpost, complete with an Elder Brain. I had dozens of figures on the table, ropers, umber hulks, and various other Underdark and Illithid related figures. The dream has inspired me to collect yet another set of things.

Illithids, Mind Flayers.

I've always liked them – creepy, freaky monsters, useful for fantasy gaming as well as Pulp Cthulu and even sci-fi stuff (potentially).

And they've been making Mind Flayer miniatures for 25+ years now, too. As far as I can tell, nearly every company that's ever had license to make D&D miniatures has made a Mind Flayer figure at some point.

I've got a couple of Ral Partha ones, two Reaper "not Mind Flayer" minis, a Grenadier one, and a couple of the current D&D plastic ones.

The Otherworld website has a wonderful gallery of the Citadel figures… but I'm sure there must be more. Ebay doesn't have anything currently listed that I don't have yet (although I would like someone to explain "Half-Illithid Lizardfolk" to me…)

Can anyone link me to pics of their Mind Flayers, information about old manufacturers, OOP figures (or current "not-illithid" manufacturers). I'm looking for 28mm figs, but a few 20mm or 15mm figs would be OK – I can call them homonculi, or halfling-grown Illithids.

I expect I'll update this thread over the next few months, as I collect more figures and paint them.

-Alex

Heritage Dungeon Dwellers had one or two. Great for their time, but a bit small and crude by current standrds.

Garand23 Jan 2009 10:57 a.m. PST

There's a not-Illithid from Black Tree as well: picture

Damon.

Alxbates23 Jan 2009 11:01 a.m. PST

Some of the oldest ones might end up doing duty as statues.

Good find on the Black Tree one – I never would have thought to look there… but ye gods that's an ugly sculpt.

Still, I'm gonna buy it! It might be the angle, or maybe just need a different paint job. Thank you! Keep 'em coming, please!

GreatScot7223 Jan 2009 11:01 a.m. PST

The old publishers of Kryomech minis (can't recall the name right now) made a "Bthulu" miniature that was pretty fun.

Pretty sure it is OOP now.

Superfigs makes a one that might fit the bill:

ooh, I like the Heritage "Mind Disruptor" figure!!

picture

zerozero23 Jan 2009 11:15 a.m. PST

Grim Reaper made one picture
can still get him from Ral Partha Europe

jpattern223 Jan 2009 11:20 a.m. PST

Good luck, Alex.

I collect Beholders and not-Beholders, and Umber Hulks and not-Umber Hulks. So far I've been able to obtain 65 different Beholders and 33 different Umber Hulks, and i know there are more out there.

I suspect there are almost as many Illithids and not-Illithids out there, if not more, so you have your work cut out for you. I have a lot of them, so I'll pull together a list of what I have and post it later.

Garand23 Jan 2009 11:47 a.m. PST

Also looks like Grenadier did one in its Tomb of Spells boxed set: picture (take a look at entry "O").

Damon.

One of my favorites is the one in techno-armor from Magnificent Egos. This is the resin version:

link

It was also available in metal. I, too, went through a grab-the-evil-octopus-dudes phase. What I found disappointing is that in the 3.0+ art, illithids are depicted as these gaunt, goth, creepy critters with goggles, scalpels, outfits made from black leather, etc. Almost none of the miniatures look like that. They pretty much all look like Gandalf with calamari sticking out of their gobs.

If you like the 3.0 look, I'd recommend getting the four available poses of Cephalyx for Warmachine and somehow give them cephalopod heads.

A Cephalyx (properly creepy):

Here is a female one from Black Orc games. And its only a buck to boot…

BTW… I bought about 10 of these figs, as the HEAD IS A SEPARATE PIECE! Head swaps, here I come!

richarDBM, that is a perfect likeness to Zoidberg's girlfriend!

Henrix23 Jan 2009 3:46 p.m. PST

There are Walktapus from Glorantha/RuneQuest too. Not really the same, but still
link
(Both Ral Partha and Citadel made one each, as well, IIRC.)

You could also perhaps get a 'not-Davy Jones'. I've seen a couple around.

Here are all of the Illithids, not-Illithids, Cthulhoids, Squidoids, and Octopoids that I'm aware of, past and present. I'm probably missing minis from some of the older or smaller companies out there. There are also lots more octopi, giant squids, and tentacled sea monsters out there, if you care to expand your search.

With a drill, wire and a little bit of green stuff you could possibly alter half of the existing miniatures out there into Illithids.Isn't that difficult.
;-)

Norscaman24 Jan 2009 5:23 a.m. PST

Rogcollectibles,
Here is your Exarch: link

A little snakey…

Alxbates24 Jan 2009 8:04 a.m. PST

Yeah, a little serpentine, but very cool! Great Cthonic monster!

jpattern224 Jan 2009 9:09 a.m. PST

Norscaman, that is one wild Illithid!

Mad Dog25 Jan 2009 12:48 p.m. PST

There's also the Wizards of the Coast Demonweb Thoon Hulk:

auction

jpattern225 Jan 2009 3:57 p.m. PST

Good catch, Mad Dog. In fact, that would make a great Illithid statue, repainted appropriately.

richarDISNEY11 Feb 2009 2:03 p.m. PST

NOt quite an Illthid – tentacles out of the body – but worth a look.

Great White Games – octopons

picture

jpattern214 Feb 2009 9:24 p.m. PST

Already covered in my list, Richard, but as an Old Glory release:

Old Glory 50 Fathoms-007 Octopons (Cthulhoid) link

jpattern214 Feb 2009 9:29 p.m. PST

I will add the two-headed Cosmic Stranger from Hydra Miniatures, though: link

RedSkullz18 Mar 2009 9:58 p.m. PST

I noticed there is one missing from the WOTC pre-painted line of minis:
Shuluth Archvillian-War Drums #38/60

jpattern221 Mar 2009 5:30 p.m. PST

Cool, I hadn't seen that one yet, Red.

Darwin Green03 Apr 2009 6:35 a.m. PST

i'm really surprised that no-one mentioned GW's Genestealer head that has "feeder tentacles"

link

with these heads you can turn anything into a mindflayer.

let alone Privateerpress's game Monsterocalypse has a whole faction of Cthulu's. Called the lords of Cthul.

joshuaslater09 Apr 2009 10:14 a.m. PST

Well with the Cthulhu mythos being public domain, as far as I know, it appears anyone can sculpt critters like this.

Also funny Alex, I've been on a mind flayer/illithid/Bathalian/aberration kick lately too.

Cheers.

Ginfritter26 Oct 2009 6:15 a.m. PST

I would like to add to jpattern2's list with Ginfritter's Gnomish Workshop Squidbeard the Illithkin Pirate. Link:

I can appreciate the necro-lift of this thread, some of the links have broken since but the idea behind the squid faces is a valid one.

Certainly one of the best monster to come from the D&D collection of creatures :)

abdul666lw17 Sep 2011 11:49 a.m. PST

Not much difference (except in clothes) between Illithids and some Cthulhu cultists:

picture

I'm almost sure I saw similar minis with the hood on: does it ring a bell? Was it indeed in 28mm?
