I'm expecting some samurai this week for my Diorama, is there any online how to's on how to paint the samurai armor?

Griefbringer21 Jan 2009 6:44 a.m. PST

Are you looking for tutorial on how to paint your models, or for instructions on how to torture captured enemy?

Both would be nice, but mostly a tutorial on how to paint

ArchiducCharles21 Jan 2009 7:23 a.m. PST

Funny lapsus, as I personnally think painting Samuraļ is torture!

Kelly Armstrong21 Jan 2009 7:23 a.m. PST

Painting samurai is torture, so torturial sounded right to me.

Get ready with paint and brushes for this one. I like the Samurai in robes personally. ;)

I've painted a lot of samurai. I assume this is 28mm. What I do is paint the armour and skin first. Half of them get red armour the others get black. I then paint all the ropes and ties an off-white. Hats get painted black. Any brown hue gets a wash of brown and highlighs. The black gets a drybrush of dark gray and a light gray. Finally, I pick some bright interesting colors for the silks and paint each man individually so the unit looks to be filled with a rag tag of individuals. I've posted this method more in depth in other threads on the same topic.

First, get your eyes checked. They will be ruined. Second, pick up some Ospreys, and whatever color books that you can get. Third, dispose of any color sense or sense of taste that you have.

In truth, Samurai armor tends to be dark. I would black prime, thin black basecoat the armor and then put whatever color you choose on the armor. The kimono's, hakima and other clothing will be colorful. Drybrush for the details on the armor. Samurai miniatures in armor tend to be well detailed , making drybrush a good technique.

In Kimono or hakima, men tend to wear browns and blacks rather than the peacock type colors. White is the color of death, and is formal. Women get brighter. Certain colors tend to be worn by certain classes. Don't put peasants in green. Purple and certain bright colors tend to be Kuge or Buke class only.

nycjadiem, very useful. Please to create a blog and do a full thingy with pictures? That would be awesome.

Gunfreak, Go to "yahoo groups" and then "samuraigaming" ask Dean and "lilljonas" for help, both are getting very good at painting "Samurai"

Thanks for the hint, now I know what to do, but not how.
I just got them, and my big problem is getting the black lines between the plates on the armor(it's like painting kilts all over) any trick to get the black lines?

I might not have ths skills to get the lines straight, I thought the plates were no pronounced

Not happy with it, I simply can't get the armor right,

setsuko24 Jan 2009 8:23 a.m. PST

oldbob: really? Thanks for the compliment! (I'm lilljonas). You can see some of my painting on Warseer too, link I'm thinking of doing something that is easier to read, especially since there's comments and whatnot in the way if you read that thread. Also I never really did any actual tutorials, which is something that is sorely needed when it comes to 28mm samurai painting IMHO. But hopefully it does show you that patience and practice helps, as the latest painted samurai are much better than my first attempts.

Gunfreak: My initial thought is that you probably paint with too thick paints. Do you use acrylics? If so, add water until you get an almost milky thickness. In your attempt it seems like some details are a bit obscured by thick paint. It takes longer time with thinned paints, but the results are worth it. It will be easier to make the details, such as the laces and the leg armour, to stick out that way.

oldbob24 Jan 2009 9:54 a.m. PST

Use ink's over your base coat to get your darker colours between plates. Dark blue basecoat with a thin black ink wash. Orange base coat with a thin red ink wash. Sand or light brown with a thin chestnut ink wash.

Here's my second and third atempts,

The black was my second, the dark red is my third, on the dark red I tried to thin the colors

Gunfreak those are much better than my first attempt at samurai. Found some pictures that you may be interested in for your diorama. They are in Battles of the Samurai by Turnbull. They show the fence that the Oda arquebusers stood in front of when they broke the Takeda charge. A drawing of the shooters on one page, and a picture of the remade fence on the next. Sorry don't have the equipment to post the pictures.
